Here are a few of my wrasses, I have a handful for sure.

Got this from LFS a few months ago in the bag from wholesaler and was labeled "Potter's Wrasse", except the coloring is not quite right. So I am not quite sure what I have but I do like him.

I expected the body to have a yellow/gold cast to it and although there is some of that, there is a lot of green to the body color.

It is a Potter's; male in fact.

I believe its the change to male when you get that green color . Beautiful fish!!!

The blue in the body fades out with a large, mature male. What makes it distinctly male is the lines on the face (no longer individual dots) and the red/orange at the front of the dorsal fin.

Not quite fully a "him" yet; sub-male right now.

I got my pair of Melanurus Wrasses today from Vivid! They are beautiful. I can't post any pics yet, they're still hiding. Maybe I can get a shot of them in the next few days. When I opened the box, the female was upside down and barely alive. I had the lights off and started adding tank water, but she was totally lethargic. I went ahead and put her in the tank and she perked right up. She was eating pods in the dark within 30 minutes! Thank you Vivid!

Well that sure was a quick and good decision you made there ... and yes they will hide ... but should be out fairly quickly as long as there are no fish that bully them in the tank.

They play dead when they are freaked out.

First, Kole...you know your stuff! The female was just playing dead...lol.

I love this fish!!! She is stunning. People have been telling me for a long time to get a Melanurus. I should have done it a long time ago. This morning she has been out and about hunting and eating. I haven't seen the male yet. How long will they hide? I hope he shows up soon. I have looked everywhere except under the sand. No one is picking on them. I've attached a few pictures of the female...enjoy!

They sleep and hide under the sand so that is probably where your male is. It is not uncommon for them to hide for a few days to a week after being introduced to a new tank. Just give it time and he will come out as he gets comfortable.

I haven't seen the male yet. How long will they hide? I hope he shows up soon. I have looked everywhere except under the sand. No one is picking on them.

Up to 2-3 weeks is possible. Do NOT go digging through the sand looking for him at any point during this time.

If another fish was picking on them, that would cause them to keep going back into the sand, not necessarily stay in the sand for a longer period. This initial hide is simply a rest and recovery period from the environmental change, transition stress, shipping stress, etc.

Anyone else here siphon their sand? Just curious to see if there are any techniques to make sure you aren't stabbing your wrasses under the sand.
