It doesn't make much sense to be 'cost conscious' while shopping for salts, and then mention the use of additives with the salt that you brought home. Part A and Part B ? That's all 1990's. If your corals aren't growing with the use of Reef Crystals through Red Sea Coral Pro, then I'd consider replacing the fixture that's hanging above the tank.

Welcome to Reef2Reef!

Am I understanding you correctly? You think two part systems are no longer a good choice?

FWIW, adding calcium and magnesium to a salt mix can make it cheaper to attain the same salinity. I did that for many years with IO, and the Dowflake and Mag Flake I used were less expensive than salt mix, making the cost to get to a specific salinity less. :)

Does no one use Brightwells NeoMarine salt anymore??

Been out of the hobby since 2011 but Im slowly getting back. Just happen by this thread and I was a little shocked I didn't see any mention of Brightwells salt mix. Back then, it was gold. All the local shops used it as well. I used it exclusively for about 2 years before moving from CO to San Diego without issues.

All I'm suggesting to everyone is if you're experiencing coral growth problems, chances are it's not your salt. And with today's choices of salts, the need to 'supplement' no longer exists. It's that simple. If people think it's cheap to supplement, then please, by all means, come supplement a 1400. Red Sea Pro works just fine. The initial mix may be a little high, but hang tight and watch what happens. If you care for the initial concentrations, then mix it with the crap that you're running now.

Welcome to R2R!
Would you care to explain what you talking about? I read it that the higher values of rscp allow you not to have to dose supplements?
Would you share your system details/pics?
Size tank, how long it's been set up, what corals you are keeping, the size of the colonies, how much growth you have witnessed in the tank, how often you are doing water changes and what percent/volume of water you change?

Dont worry Randy, you'll figure it out someday.

Thanks. I'll keep trying to understand what you are talking about. It may take a while since what you are saying isn't, at the moment, making sense. lol

Anyone else using Omega Sea reef salt? I love how easy it is to mix up and so far my tank seems happy! I've been using it since I setup my tank 4 months ago...

the need to 'supplement' no longer exists.

Perhaps you'd be kind enough to suggest a water change regimen for me, my tank drops 2-2.5 dKH per day if I don't supplement or run my reactor. Thanks in advance!

I think people having success with their salt brand of choice, they should post pic of their tank.

I use literally what ever is either on sale or I decide to try. Haven't used the same box of salt in a while 6 months. Haven't seen the first sign that my corals are unhappy with that

Currently using RC and just changed ~50 gallons.

Depends on the tank alk you keep and the salt you use.

But if you keep 8 dKH and the salt is 12 dKH, it is easy to calculate that you need to change about 50% daily to add 2 dKH daily.

That's why it doesn't work. :)

Supplementing is required.
