We have known for quite some time that OST is an effective treatment for ciliated parasites. A number of excellent studies and articles have made that point, particlularly Lowry and Colorni. I would suggest that hyposalinity is no more time consuming or labor intensive than treating with copper and is certainly immensely less stressful to the fish. When coupled with adequate oxygenation and raised tank temperatures there is even some emerging evidence that hyposalinity may be effective faster than copper treatment. I would respectfully suggest that hyposalinity would be a more appropriate prophylactic treatment for ich with copper treatment being necessary only in cases where hyposalinity proves ineffective.

Are you aware there are hypo resistant strains of ich? I can pull up the full study on Google Scholar if you like, but below was taken from here: https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/fa164
More recently, studies have demonstrated different salinity tolerances among strains of Cryptocaryon. Yambot (2003) described one Taiwanese outbreak occurring in sea bream Sparus sarba at a salinity of 5 g/L, and another outbreak in sea perch Lates calcarifer occurring at a salinity of 10 g/L. These two strains were successfully propagated in the laboratory at 7 and 10 g/L, respectively, and are well below previously documented preferred salinities.

Also, many times velvet is misdiagnosed as ich early on by the untrained eye, and once the fish is already in hypo it is very difficult (on the fish) to combine that with needed chemical treatment. A fish with velvet doesn't have enough time to raise the SG to begin treatment.

You also must use a perfectly calibrated refractometer at all times while doing hypo, and I recommend an ATO to keep the SG at 1.009. If the SG inches up even slightly, the 30 day treatment clock restarts. You also must continually buffer the pH whist performing hypo. Hypo certainly has its downsides/pitfalls and is not as "easy" as it sounds, if you do it correctly.

I just got a red tailed butterflyfish. Do you have experience with quarantining this guy?

Hello guys. I am quarantining a powder with a red tailed butterfly. The butterfly is eating but the powder isnt. When first bought it, it was free of ick. But due to my qt wanst ready i asked my friend to take care of it for couple days. It came to me after a week and it was covered with ich. I start to dose cupramine slowly increasing to 0.5 mg. Its still on process of increasing.

The butterfly and the powder are now clean of visible ich. But my powder is so skinny that i dont think he will survive long. Still swimming but flashing once a while. And not eating just hiding.

What do yoi suggest me to do? It makes me ache looking at it getting skinnier everyday...

It would be best to get him eating before starting copper. Honestly, I would pull the copper and do TTM with these guys.

It seems you have a Powder Brown Tang in the mix. With him being present I would certainly treat for ich right off the bat. You can run them through copper or TTM and do Prazi during that treatment or after. With the Powder Brown it's imperative it get's the treatment for ich.

My biggest priority now is for them to eat. What do you suggest?

Lots of nori (algae sheets). You can try the red and green. I've heard from 4fordfamily that the red sometimes entices picky tangs to eat better than the green so you might try that. It is usually already soaked in garlic, so you dont need to do that with nori. You can try live brine, mysis, LRS reef frenzy, Roe. The choices are endless, but you gotta find what he's willing to eat and start from there.

Would pulling off copper make him eat?

Well it could help. Lack of appetite is one of the side effects of copper and other meds, so it's important to take the time to get them eating well before going into the meds. This is assuming it's not an emergency situation and they arn't going to die eminently without the meds.

I saw them covered in ich. So my only choice is soaked algea right now right?

With the powder brown it's a tuff call. I can't see him, so it's hard to make a judgement call like that for you. Does he look like he will die from ich or starvation first? Remember it's 30 days of copper straight. Do you think he can last that long without eating (assuming he doesn't start eating soon)?

Hello. My powder blue died 3 days agom now is the remaining butterfly. He was eating normally 3 days ago but stop very soon after the powder died. I see him flashing against the pvc often. His tail is a little bit cloudy. I changed 90% and observing. Does it has anything to do with worms or itch? Because cannot see the spots.

Have you treated for worms?

It looks pretty normal from the outside. There are some white patches on him in the second picture though. Since you have him caught have you done a freshwater dip on him yet? That would be my first step here.
