My name is Dave.

I have had many fresh water tanks going back to when I was a kid. My youngest son, he's 8, showed some interest in fish when he visited the aquarium in Chicago. After he asked more times than I can count about getting a fish tank, I took the opportunity to delve into a saltwater aquarium.

We are 3 full weeks into it now. We have 2 clown fish, Nemo style. 20 red leg hermit crabs, 5 emerald crabs, 4 nassarius snails, 1 died we had 5, 5 ninja snails, 5 periwinkle snails, and 4 corals.

We just had a spike in nitrates it nitrites with alge on the glass, I can't remember which the LFS said that tested the water. They said to use some SEED to help.

I'm trying to learn as much as I can. The reef tanks can be so beautiful, and I'd like ours to be that way.

Thanks,
Dave

Hello David, Tell us about Your plans?
I'm not really sure about a plan. We want lots of color, so I'm relying on my LFS for help with what goes with what and the timing of adding things. My daughter wants an anemone. I'm guessing we will get that if it will play nice. The more I learn the more of a direction I'll be able to come up with.

We go to Tropiquatics in Lombard. They seem very knowledgeable, and they have been very helpful.

Sound like a good start can you post a photo? Your tank is cycling. Do a water change to get your nitrates down and I would recommend adding a bag of carbon. It will help to keep your water clean. Take your time if you hurry bad things happen. And unlike fresh water it can cost you hundreds of dollars when it happens. Trust me it just happened to me. I try to read as much as u can and I always try to play it safe. After all I'm not even close to being rich. Over all I love the hobby and it's very satisfying.

We are only 3 weeks into this. The zetlight are great so far, and with the wifi controller it simulates the sun throughout the day.

How deep is your tank. I'm curious I have seen the Zetlight but I'm worried that they won't go deep enough. I have a Zetlight 6500 on my 45 gal and I love it but I'm concerned it's not frspaching everywhere
Thanks

Welcome home, you will love it here!

Take things very slow with this hobby, as nothing good comes quickly. Keep us posted!
