I have a fixture that uses LED Pucks, so the leds are close together.

The Pucks have a medium degree lens on them and then they have a diffuser on top of that.

I mounted them 12" above the surface.

The shimmer and color separation is nauseating. My tank has no sump and uses a HOB filter. I also have no skimmer so one powerhead is pointed right at the surface.

Is there a way to reduce this without reducing surface agitation?

I thought raising the lights would reduce this effect because the LEDs would have more space to blend, but I have read you are supposed to lower them.
Is this true?

Right now I am thinking,
Reduce height to 6"
Remove lens

Thanks,

Ram

You are going to have to take off the plastic optic to reduce the disco. What's the light?

Removing the lenses will help and raising them helps, not lowering them. Expect a reduction in par values when removing lenses.
Also, you could place a diffusing panel under them instead of removing the lenses. Thin frosted glass maybe, but once again expect a reduction of par value.

Yep that is correct.

I was already going to do this, was looking for clarification of the raising / lowering, as it contradicted my common sense.

But as you stated, raising should help, which was my original thought.

Or get a HOB skimmer and point my powerheads away from the surface.
