The spot looks the same as one on an old banana. There may be some coralation.

Aliens...

I have not fed him bananas, but occasionally I do feed my fish bananas after I freeze them. Batfish love bananas and my Moorish Idol used to enjoy them occasionally. :D

Melanoma is an interesting theory; a simple skin scrape examined under a microscope should at least turn up lymphocytes within the lesion if it is cancerous.

I personally think he's just trying to morph into a Muelleri. ;)

The copperband still seems fine and I still have no idea what that black mark is. If he starts swimming all weird and everything I will assume it is cancer or something serious. I have never seen this before

Doesn't look like a bruise. It is jet black and no raised scales. Just the discoloration. Bruises have red margins and don't last this long. I have had this fish for a few years and he is my largest fish, no competition.
You can see that now the black mark is no longer touching the right edge of the yellow band

Still on the hold out on the yeast? If so I would assume the yeast caused it!

I stopped "that" yeast but still feed yeast. Now I feed nutritional yeast which is yeast that is killed. It is mainly for the corals. (I take it myself) But I don't have any idea if it is good for corals, fish or even Supermodels. It is an experiment.
But, yes, that was the only thing I changed. I don't know what it is but I assume it is not a disease. My fish generally do not get diseases but it is just some sort of condition with his melanin just like we sometimes get.
He seems fine and is still my biggest eater by far. It is hard to keep enough clams for him.

Empress, thank you for posting. We never have enough Empresses. It may be a birth mark, but he wasn't born with it and I am 100% sure your Daughter is much cuter than that fish. :p
