Cyclist, I use a Vortex Diatom filter. It uses diatom powder that will remove anything as large as a micron. That includes parasites and most bacteria. It is just a mechanical filter. After you use it, you backflush it to discard the powder and put it away. It is not meant to be used constantly. I need it to clean the detritus from my reverse UG filter but it will polish water of whatever is in it that is not dissolved. Most people would not need one. It depends on how you run your tank and what substrate you use.
