When you begin a reef tank you need to begin what is called the CYCLE. Usually that takes 4 weeks. bacteria are grown in tank during that time to eat the fish poop and waste and bad things like ammonia. Without that algae and bad bacteria will grow. Ammonia will kill fish and corals. High nitrates phosphates and ammonia can stress fish and cause disease. that is why a good cycle is so important. It is the BIO filter.

Please please pleas promise me you will do research on how to set up a reef tank. READ READ READ.

My advice right now is turn off the return pump OR the hang on back filter. If you dont know how to use the skimmer yet turn off the return.
I have run many tanks on a HOB.
You need to fix the BIO filter. Got to the fish store band buy PRIME and STABILITY they are bacterial supplements MB7 is good too.
You need to buy a power head Hydor Koralia 420. you will probably need 2. The bacteria need flow or they die off. that is what is feeding the cyano and algae.
BUY activated carbon and a small bag. put about 4 tablespoons in the sock and put it in the HOB or next to the return pump.
Buy some chato and put it in the sump away from skimmer and pump. if only using HOB put in tank.
Reduce lighting to 8 hours. If Cyano gets worse turn off completely for a few days.

Good news you have live rock that contains good bacteria and will help SEED the tank BIO filter.
Bad news is you will lose your corals. the zoas are gone. Sorry.
Right now we need to save the fish.

A skimmer is the best most effective filter for a system but you have to learn it.
Activated carbon will help remove toxic crap from the water.
Chato will eat the nite & phos
The prime and stability MB7 will eat the ammonia.
I use prime and stability. Follow the directions.

Forgot to say. Get a turkey baster. blow the red crap off the rocks the filters will eat it and it should go away in a week or 2.
Always use RODI in your salt mix.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

You only need one mechanical filter. The skimmer or the aquaclear.
the skimmer takes practice. use one or the other.
and fill the tank up. get rid of the bubbles..

And sorry. but your main issue is the BIO filter.
the carbon is a chemical filter.
the chato is an organic filter.

if you dont adress the bio filter the tank will produce poision the mechanical filter can not take that out.

And in addition to the great information Saltyfilmfolks has provided you, BUY A NITRATE/NITRITES TEST KIT! It is of utmost importance that you keep these in check. If you can, purchase a kit that will allow you to test all of your water parameters.
