WOW, justt found this thread beccause of the update....
well IIdont want to sound like an old man rockin on a porch, but...
I can remember when the 1st Peaple Eaters came out...
in the early 2000s... we were already starting to name some of the zoas ,and even the palys...
the 1st Nuclear Greens came in- and we called them "Mountain Dew" palys...
we had named eagle eyes (ring)/ and alien eyes (dot center) Zombie eyes (dilated center- like your dead...)
and a few others... there were "button polyps" that were coming in that were stronger and different colors than normal...
the ones with the brite green slit mouthe we refered to *** "dragon eyes"
-because Dragons would have slits for eyes likee a goat- if you believe...
in fact ,to this day you se DE on some polyps- and its because of the early monicer
but one came in that was dark purple eggplant body but brite green fringes!!! kinda stood out...
and they were named purple people eater (after the song)
early 35 mm shot scanned off my old 386 hard drive...
ppezoas.jpg

they became all the rage, and soon the Purple People Eater dragon eye monicer was too long, I guess, and was dropped...
-dragon eye zoas followed, and got mixed in- confused and somehow the "pattern" name was lost....
this was the pattern "dragon eyes" tho- solid center, same colored fringes
so, the first BamBams were called orange dragon eyes, radioactive green were a color variant too...
but the others were renamed shortly, and too were lost....
in fact most of the "Pattern" names like Eagle eyes and Zombie eyes became associated with ONE zoa or paly over time....
-but I digress...
Soon there were better color variants and we got in Red people eaters palys:
RPE2.jpg

yep thats what "True" Red People Eaters realy looked like (see Red Rage People Eaters later...)
this was like the 2nd pic ever of them/ and 1st in focus!!!
a few "different " morphs came in:
teal green people eater
(the names werent too cool yet- just descriptive...)
TGPE.jpg

Blue/ Green PE on left
(not even green slit- just slit mouth...)
C_21.jpg

and later ones with some speckling came in too
green speckled PEs
Speckled-Green-PE.jpg

most of these were a solid form until the speckled ones
they seem to be related/ but not to the Mountain Dews or the Red People Eaters
these were different...( more like the "new" "true" red people eaters- look at the mouth...)

even a dark/ black one- Black People Eaters palys
(note-white slit mouth...)
BPEBlackPeopleEater.jpg

and then a cool name:
Irish Eyes palys (35 MM pic...)
irisheyespalys28.jpg

i think we call most of these something else now, and then some new ones came in
with a outer halo ring that was made of lines or rays- many had speckles too
the speckled greens with white halo are seen as aspen palys- just colored up:
AsperPalys8-95.jpg

and many zoas were gettin named after "super heroes" so
one that had a blueish outer halo ring and green speckles was named "Krypton Supernova"
looking like supermans home planet Krypton exploding.
and the shards of green kryptonite are the speckles...
kryptonmacro2.jpg

and one with a purple/ pink ring were named "Variable stars"
-an astronomy name for a type of waning star...
VariableStars12.jpg

-soon many speckled/ and haloed variants came in, some multicolored...

and one of my faves: the Radio Supernova 2005ish
radiosupernova2.JPG

alot of these have a darkened or black raised mout that is radically different than the solid body of a Purple people eater,
or the lined rays to the center like in the Red people eaters earlier
but we DID start getting in some Red People eaters that were different!!! these also had the darkened/ non rayed centers
some call these the true red people eaters now/ but the original name in 2006ish was
Red Rage people eaters
RedRagePEpalys.JPG

much different than the - I guess "Real-True" Red People eaters...
redPE27.jpg

and orangeish fringed form appeared that was called Red flame PE
it has alternating orangeish fringes!!!
redflamePE21.jpg

and the Eye of Sauron was named to this Red PE with Black center in 2006ish
when did Lord of the rings come out??- the next year... after the all seeing eye

when all these came out it was the BOMB!!! these were the coolest palys ever!- not just variations of green...
-and they still are- unique in thier form, incredible to behold- a definite "must have"
and you can get addicted...

By the way, many of the original named People eaters didnt have a green slit mouth, many dont have the striped outer rim when closed
they did all have prominent slit mouths tho...
and we got them in by ordering "button polyps"
not the new "colony polyps" actually zoas
(before taxonomy on zoas-I remember the distributor spelling zoanthid when they became listed)

OK-and the people eaters were very popular
once the bandwagon was started, everyone wanter to call it a people eater!!!
and if it had a green slit mouth, youre IN!!! I remember saying -how many kinds of flying people eater are there
I thought it was just One, maybe be more creative, but it was too late, theyre popular!!!
I remember a customer coming in and saying," I need some People eaters...-what are they???"- LOL:squigglemouth:
-this realy took off in the late 2008-09 range
but I believe that when Blane Perunwas corrected in taxonomy- it was by referring th the Purple people eater style of polyps,
-and not the "Space" named looking ones...
-I also believe he renamed them to zoanthus Gigantea because they were definitly NOT related to the regular button polyps
but were the palys size-not zoa size....Hmmm
and didnt fit the criteria for the genus palythoa that was set in like 1883
having to do with the messreintinia (pedal foot growth)
but of course now we know that there are seamat polyps, moon polyps, polyps that are colonial (have common structure)
and pseudocolonial polyps - and each as diverse as it is- are still listed as zoanthus...
and I still believe they are a type of palythoa, just not related to the button polyps closely- like originaly thougt by perun
afterall you can see the relation to most of these larger polyps out there
and most of these polyps are found under zoas on Google, rather than listed as palys... across the board, not just in this family (PEs)
but it doesnt mean its not a paly either.... sure they have the degrees and stuff...
its easier to say zoas are the smaller ones, and palys are the bigger "huskier" polyps - in general...
and I also believe that we are looking at 3 maybe 4 seperate species of polyps here that are grouped into what we now refer to as
People Eater polyps
if you stripped the colors away, so they are the same
one has a solid body with a slit mouth
one has a outer halo ring that has radial lines 1/2 way into the body, then smooth ans slit mouths
one has radial lines to the center with slit, and one has a darkened bulging center w/slit
so if you can follow me...
-an agave/ seduction is just a red rage people eater with white frosting...
an aspen is just a green speckled PE with white frosting...
but these arent the same species of polyp!!! they may be related, but not the same- its clear
this isnt meant to be a taxonomy thread tho...
so the solids/ speckles/ and supernovas will continue to be referred to as
People Eater palys or zoas and we all know what were talkin 'bout

once the Hawaiian variants started coming in- It was "Game Over"
I remember my 1st Hawaiin Sticky punch (guess we ran out of galaxy names)
some of these come from Indo too- but alot of the Hawaiian variants are different
another way of looking at it was that ALOT of zoas were named and not too many palys were
- until these came in, once the Supernova styles hit, it started catching up
and the cooler ones are much more common from Hawaii - or people like zoa collector knows where theyre at!!!:crossedlips:
Big Props to the collection, Bro... seriously

Once Australia opened there were a few more new ones, and the old friend Time Travel
and one that was just Lime and red like it- gotta have a pic here somewhere
-not sure if that old 386 hard drive will read again...its about had it (maxtor 90GB-Woooo!)
with bad sectors...
(thats an old school type of computer for you Yungstas!)
and I used to have records with music on them....-Google it......
