Again, that is hogwash. Every professional chemist will agree with me. There is no chemical reaction taking place, no matter how many times you claim it.

surfectants are physical too now? hmm interesting.

gah. lol

no reason to argue with my lil know-nothing attitude. you got it figured. no amount of discussion or text-book play will sway you

I think I'll believe the guy with a PhD over the guy who can't even capitalize the first word of a sentence. Russ265 has been taken to school this entire thread!!!

Someone is lecturing a PhD (from Harvard no less) about biochemistry and can't spell surfactant?:D

yet water isnt homogenous and surfactants arent chemical.

also ive been typing on a phone. not a computer. this isnt a resume.

sure...

rather than listen to randy. google anything. you will get MIT grad answers that counter what randy is trying to tell me

Russ is this you or did someone hack your account?
For as long as I have known you you have NEVER argued like this

because randy is wrong

foam fractionating (the tech behind a skimmer) is not just making bubbles and wishing doc away. it is beyond mechanical means.

randy stated it is physical.

he is wrong. phd with harvard and all with a cherry on top. he is incorrect and is misplaced with his knowledge and how he applied it in reef keeping.

idc tbh. you guys follow him no matter what. but he is dead wrong.

i can only speak simply for so long, but he completely avoided a lot of crucial information.

yeah well... tell the scientific journal that. foam fracturing is chemical and will always be so.

the cause for surface tension is the difference in the energetic state between a molecule at the surface compared to a molecule inside the liquid phase: the molecule inside has lower energetic state as it has more inermolecular interactions (or, to get to the surface, a molecule needs to break intermolecular bonds, which needs energy). This is more pronounced with higher polarity or when ions (charges) are around as the interactions are then stronger.

You can increase the polarity of a (polar) solvent to get higher surface tension, by dissolving salts.

i feel i am being trolled....

refute this randy...
i already typed it. why should i continue repeating myself?

he wont. because he cannot.

I would like to see a balanced chemical equation representing foam fractionating...maybe!?! One shedding some light on possible exo or endothermic reactions?!?

My guess is it is better explained through the a Physical process!!!

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/11963868/

might get you started.
there are some white papers below it the article if it isnt verbose enough.

I think we are confusing the "average" skimmer user.

tbh. skimmer guys are confusing wet skimmig with physical actions and dont really realize what they are talking about.

that is why when i saw some sort of window analogy and i got a little unglued.

ill say this. if youre the average user.

want to see if im trolling?

google these....

foam fractionating mechanical
foam fractionating chemical
water homogeneous
surfactants chemical
surfactants mechanical

read up a lil on those. then compare to what randy is stating.

these are the basics if you are following along

for extra credit... search

dwell time homogenous

plenty of phds from MIT, Caltech, Yale, Harvard etc

Just one question before I go read...
Does any of this have to do with saltwater aquaria and the use of our skimmers in an enclosed ecosystem. (I already read the first link)

they are the meat and potatoes of my initial statement and skimming wet vs skimming dry.
