I noticed earlier in the thread that you said you needed a license to collect fish is this for buying fish from lfs or are you going to collect native marine fish for your aquarium?

Well I may have explained me the wrong way. I need a license to collect Natural Sea Water. If I collect water without a license I risk a fine that can go up to 3000€.
My fish and corals come from LFS or Friends.

Greeting from HK. Great reef tank.

Thank you timhhl. Greetings!

All the best,
Rui

Hello ;),

Can this be the so infamous Walt Disney?

I bought it in a LFS in Portugal for 25€ and I have really high hopes for this one.

The mother colony had much more colour and was placed high in light and flow in the Display Tank. So a week ago I pushed up mine and I can see some of the colours starting to develop

I think it will take some time now ... i will keep track and update at least weekly with a Photo.

Hi Rui,
Can you tell us what kind of products like zeovit etc. you are using? Do you feed your corals? Thanks.

Of course I can ...
I do nothing ... I feed nothing ... Well not entirely true. Let me explain.

Not sure if it's the thread as I can't remember if I told the story.

So I was battling with nutrients in my tank as I keep a 0.00 reading in PO4 and always an undetectable amount of Nitrates on a Salifert test kit.

The corals were really pale and not colouring and I moved from 100 litres water change per week to as low as 50 litres every 3 weeks in the hope that nutrients would build up. Meantime I was feeding corals with Coral Freenzy and Reef Roids and had absolutely no results.

Until one guy that I don't know personally told me "your aquarium for a 1y old aquarium looks like a piece of crap" ...
I replies ... "well I know that. What is your suggestion?"
He told me ... "your aquarium is too sterile. Do 200l waterchange every 3 days and we will speak after ..."
I tought: This guy is crazy I am battling with nutrients and he wants me to strip the aquarium even more????

Well at that stage I decided that I had nothing to lose and started. 200l every 3/4 days which represents about 15% of my water volume.

And the result after just 2 weeks was impressive. So Natural Sea Water freshly collected as a lot of live that feeds the corals. The results for me were so impressive that I kept the routine and changed nearly 7000 litres of water in 3 month ... I am stepping down a bit and changing 200l every 4/5 days and the system is what you see. I have the fortune of having a NSW next to me (20m away) and I try to hold at any point in time at least 400l for change if needed.

So I have:
Heaters (2x 500w Titanium Heaters), Skimmer (ATI PowerCone 250iS - which I really think it's underrated for the beast it is) and return pump in the SUMP (Jebao 12000). Nothing else.
I have chaeto growing in a fuge (almost 10% of the total water volume)
I run Triton base method for KH, Ca and Mg control (I plan to change to Calcium Reactor as I am dosing nearly 200ml per day as this is becoming expensive)
and
I feed fish with frozen artemia and mysis two or three times per week, and every day nori, pellets, flakes and Masstick (for the chelmon)

And that's it.
All the best,
Rui

You get fresh sea water... no additive is better than what is already in the natural sea water as long as the water near where you live is not polluted...

From the beginning, you started your tank with natural sea water , right? The guy who taught you to have 200L water, was in a way asking you to replenish the elements/foods that corals need by doing water change, am I correct?

Yes, and Yes ... and also increase the biodiversity in the aquarium!

Meanwhile ...

With this new thing of taking photos to the aquarium I ordered a new toy :D

IMG_1963.JPG

Mid February when I travel to US I will be able to bring it with me!

With this in mind I thought it would be difficult to raise and lower the ATI T5 fixtures everytime I want to take a picture and I decided I needed an lift for that!

After reading some topics, discuss with some Portuguese reef keeper friends and also Sahin I got to this design that will cost me 60/70€ to implement.

I will need a shade lifter, some octagonal tubing, some supports, a switch and 4 rollers and I should be fine.

This week I am out of the country working but the next one see if I can start implementing.

All the best,
Rui

Hello everyone ...

So the tank is definitely opening. Glad the new tank will be here next week and I have planned already for the 4th of February the replacement. The distance now between the front glass and this black glass is 7mm.

Meanwhile I started stocking NSW for the exchange. I can store up to 2150 litres which will give me for a month of Water Change ...

also started my project around ATI Fixture Electric Lift. I used a shade lift and it's finally working.

Thanks Paulo. Just need to do the same with yours ...

Meanwhile I had to test the lift to take some top down shots.

With a Top Down Viewer the photos are a crap as I can get the focus right. Hold the camera, the top down, careful not to get water in ... crazy!

I am dying to get the top down tube from BAO!

Thanks Rev!

Very practical to clean the fixtures, to do maintenance on the aquarium, to view from above, top down pictures ... I am very happy.

All the best,
