Great article! My husband actually bought me my first SW tank for my 33rd birthday. I think he was a little 'price' shocked when I asked him to invest in a bigger setup a few years later and started getting into corals. I talked it over with him and we set a monthly budget(which has gradually increased 3 tanks later). I love my hobby so much that almost all of my gifts through the year are for my tanks. He doesn't like going to the fish store with me but that's ok because I would rather be by myself to think and not be rushed. An hour goes by really fast in a candy store, lol! It also helps that he has a passion for basketball and spends a lot of his spare time coaching which gives me time to work on my tanks. I think if we don't go crazy and give our spouses time to acclimate and understand our passion, they will come around, if only because they love us and want us to be happy.

$50???? I spend more than that on fish food every month.

Obviously my reefing budget wouldn't work for you. The point was to illustrate what my "normal" spending is on my reef. I save up for things that I need and spend wisely. Of course my $50 goes a long way when you include my store discount and the fact that i have tons of store credit for bringing in coral frags and what-not. :p

...i can relate to what everyone has said!!(Exept the cornhole post) She does not ask at times how much I spend, and if she does I bashfully tell the truth(even though she might not be able to handle or like the truth). The thing that she does not like is if the tank interferes with family activities, and house chores. Other than that I have caught her standing in front of the 120 looking at the fish.

After "babysitting" the tank in my home office twice while I was out of town on business, I came home the second time to "I couldn't stop looking .. everything changes depending on the time of the day! Can we please get one for the bedroom?" Uhhh.. sure! And now she's talking about wanting a bit larger tank for the family room. Half the time, she'll go with me to oogle at corals. When it comes to fish, she knows what she wants and she's patient enough to wait until one becomes available (in this case, a Dracula Goby w/A. randalii (candy cane pistol shrimp). The budget's not unlimited, but she knows I'm not going to skimp on lights, pumps, etc. either.

She still leaves the maint. and technical to me, but she picks out the corals for her tank. Gotta love it when they get hooked themselves!

I wouldn't have put any of that in writing on the Internet. :p
Ha ha well i may have exaggerated. We actually made a handshake agreement a while back. She agreed to not say anything about my reefing, and in return I leave her alone about her crossfit, and cable tv. Sounds about fair.

I certainly make it a point to brag to her when i sell a $500 bounce shroom or a nice zoa pack. But I'm sure she has to figure if I'm selling that much how much am I spending. Lol

Don't give me flowers. Give me a fish, coral or the bills folded into a flower so I can get something for my aquarium. :) Write on a napkin how much you love me, and give me the $4.35 for fish stuff. LOL. My husband is nicer now about my hobby/addiction than he used to be. He used to tell people crack would be cheaper! And he builds me the stuff like stands I want. What more can a hobbyist ask for in a nonhobbyist spouse? I do wish he loved it too though.

Such a great article that hits home for me. The only thing she loves his her Yellow Headed Jawfish. But she loves to complain about the time and money I spend on her tank and mine. The funny part is she can go to a casino and drop a couple hundred dollars and not think of it. But there is no way I would try and argue that with her! Being married for 32 years I have gotten smarter on which fight to fight and which one to run from.
Sounds like my wife love that bingo and slot machines

I had to tell my wife that it is a hobby... and hobbies are ongoing activities. Once you stop then it is no longer a hobby :). I then got her involved and she now picks fish and coral, schedule us for MACNA, and helps with the tank maintanence. Plus, I don't tell her she can't do the things that she likes, no matter the cost. Of course we try to be responsible spenders (LOL) and stewards of the blessings we have.
