What is better about these LEDs?

-Almost Twice the Light as 2 400 watt Radiums and 3 250 watt 10K XMs
-12.5 amps v 25.2 amps this setup off a kilawatt meter
-Little heat compared to a Halide
-11 year bulb life.

I'm slowly ditching all my MH for these. If you have a current fixture the replacement cost is 5 years in bulb replacement alone. If your running a chiller...Buy a heater. If you DIY this would cost less than a MH/T5 combo.

The only downside is the up front cost but for me I waited prior to my annual bulb replacement and will be even in 4 years. Also I like DC lights. I always worried about my 220 volt MH ballast catching fire when I'm not home.

I just swapped out my 5 MH for 144 LEDs. I passed on the XPGs and kept with the QRE Q5 with a 1 to 1 Royal Blue to Cool White. Once the price comes down on the XPGs I think a 2 Royal Blue for every 1 Cool White would be best. Here is a pic and yes I finally have reflectors on the T5s.

what angle is the optics on the LEDs you DIYed? I am thinking of doing something like this in the next year and cost you incurred making your array.....PM please as not to hijack thread thanks....

Worry about your corals getting too much light.

That diy fixture is incredible! Also curious about what optics you are using.

They run like 7.49$ a piece on a couple sites or the kits you can get 12 bulbs with driver for like 110$ something like that lol...

You can get them for a good bit cheeper than that too, I got XP-Gs and XP-Es from Cutter for $5-6 ea. I went in with someone local and the quantity helped bring the cost down. Sweet build BTW, I am considering doing something similar with a couple T5's if I have and color issues with strait LEDs. So far my nano running LEDs is looking good though.

I'm using the Cree 60 degree...They are a bit tight only 30" of coverage.

I'll most likely swap them out for the Cree 70 degree lens I have them on the fixture I built for the JARC Led presentation and like them a lot more. Here is a pic.

For a 125 I would go with 96 on two heatsinks. I'm driving mine with the Mean Well LPC-35-700. I like it a lot more than the Buck Pucks and its less expensive. 48 Cree XRE will give about the same light as a 250 Watt MH.

Checked out the site. Just be careful about counterfeit stuff especially LEDs. The Cree knockoffs last about as long as thoes fake rolex watches. The lenses however seem to be the ones I like the best. Just be careful that they are specifically designed for the Cree XRE.

OOPS after seeing the numbers from the JARC Frag Swap you should be good with 72. These things are so bright they simply blow my skirt up.
