I have handheld tds meter and my unit has one built in. I notice i don't burn through a lot of filters which is always a plus. I am just happy to get 0 tds coming anyways lol. My tank is always crystal. I was debating whether the use ro di, or tap water with prime to fill up my 220 gallon tank. Glad i went rodi.

Well, OK, but I don't think the 2 ppm TDS is real, and don't want readers to be misled thinking it is. :D

When I first turn it on the in is about 3ppm after running its 0ppm going in. So I didn't use a ro/di system cause I didn't see the point if my water is already 0ppm tds. Im now having algae problems which I think is because I'm using tap water. So now I'm using the ro/di am I wasting my time?

Me: Lake Charles, (SW) Louisiana, USA
Tap: 379
RODI output: 0

We do get an annual breakdown of what is in our tap water from our water company. Unfortunately, since I use an RO/DI filter, I never paid that much attention to it.

You are definitely not wasting your time. ro di get's rid of metals, chlorine, chloramine and other contaminants so it is very useful. I use to be in the same boat when i saw low low low numbers from my tap. I said maybe i don't need a ro unit if i am getting 2 tds. Well i never regretted my purchase of my ro di. Mine has a di bypass which i use to fill up and for emergencies, picnics. You can call your town and ask them what they use to treat your water. But i can definitely vouch for ro di unit.

That's a potential mistake. It doesn't matter what the TDS is, you want to remove things like copper from your own pipes. TDS is not a measure of suitability for a reef, and should only be used to determine if an RO/DI is working right.

I also do not believe those numbers are accurate, but even if they are, using a DI only is very inexpensive as it will last a very long time. :)

350 here in NYC. The funny thing is, 50 years ago Life magazine ran an article saying NYC tap water was the cleanest in the country and people still quote it and call me nuts for my RO/Di system. Hey, anyone know where to get a hula hoop? It's the latest rage...
