PLEASE DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!

I assume I have and will always have dinos and cyano in my tank. But only time I get to see the dinos is after I see cyano. I only get cyano when I do something stupid. Normally I do nothing more then I normally do and it all eventually vanishes on its own. Usually over a couple months. I have the patience for it. Many don't.

I posted up what I have but it's not visible in the tank as a whole. I have to find tiny patches of cyano to find it which I usually get right at the tip of my return line which is where I found that cyano and dinos for that picture and video.

Here's what I have and previously posted

So, my tank is one long running experiment to me much like how PaulB sees his tank. Periodically I do something crazy (see diy Shapelock DIY N/P reducing Pellets or Nuking the tank... or my most recent with the How much Aluminum will it leach? Let's guess thread).

Since I feel I know how to control how to spark a large cyano and dino explosion I got a spark up my you know where to try this thanks to @twilliard.

https://www.reef2reef.com/index.php?threads/253917/

Cliffs of that thread:
Metronidazole is supposed to mess with the dinos' DNA to the point they no longer reproduce or able to very effectively hold on to the rock or substrate.

Dosages:
https://www.reef2reef.com/index.php?posts/3005509

So, correct me if i'm wrong, but the treatment goes something like:

Day 1: 1 - 2 spoons per 10g.
Day 2: 1 - 2 spoons per 10g.
Day 3: 1 - 2 spoons per 10g.
Days 4 - 14: Wait and change mechanical filtration frequently.

...

You dosed 125mg of 100% metronidazole?

Since I am using MetroPlex(70% metronidazole) I dosed 250mg. Instructions also say it's safe to do 2 spoons(125mg x 2) per 10 gallon or 250mg per 10 gallon.

And so far its shown to be safe.

"Increase MTZ's effectiveness" at what specifically? Inhibiting the things it targets? Or at overall disappearance of target organisms from system?
More hints, pls. :)

Also, ran across paper looking at MTZ toxicity on a few aquatic species.
Good news, they dosed massive amounts (30x the amount recommended here) and couldn't kill copepods.
Which means at least one important class of dino grazers is unaffected by the drug.

I have just basically done a typical OPPS! I just dumped in an automatic feeder full of pellet food into the tank. Something Ive accidentally done before while programming that automatic feeder while distracted by kids... I have also cut my carbon dosing in half to give it that final nail in the coffin to spur a tank wide infestation of cyano and dinos. It shouldn't take more then a few days to have my tank covered.

PLEASE DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!

I am doing this as I have faith in my tanks abilities, not mine, to fully recover on its own over the next couple months if this metronidazole doesn't work.

I have some Seachem Metro on its way and will treat as described above. I should have it here by Tuesday and so should be the dinos. I'll add some filter socks after day 3 to my siphon return.

This should be fun!

MetroPlex is 70% metronidazole 125mg per spoon for every 10 gallons. I use 2 spoons per 10 gallons as MetroPlex says it is safe. And it is..

If you have 100% Metronidazole you can do 125mg per 10 gallon,

MetroPlex instructions which is also what I have ordered. I will only dose for the 3 days as described above.

Edit: note,I do not believe it effective against cryptocaryon ("ich").

Description
MetroPlexTM is an effective and safe treatment for several protozoan and anaerobic bacterial diseases of fish (Cryptocaryon, Hexamita, Ichthyophthirius). It does not adversely affect the filter bed and is easily removed with carbon. There is little danger of overdosing. Usual dose is 125 mg/10 gallons. Directions: Use 1-2 measures (included) for every 40 L (10 US gallons). Repeat every 2 days for up to 3 weeks or until symptoms disappear. Turn off UV, ozone, and chemical filtration. To feed, blend 1 measure with about 1 tablespoon of frozen food paste. To minimize loss during feeding use with FocusTM. To enhance palatability use with GarlicGuardTM or EnticeTM. Food may be refrozen.

This should be interesting!

I think so but I'm more interested in getting under the microscope.

Questions:
1) Should I shutdown carbon dosing? I believe @taricha states that would be benificial
2) I was also thinking of tuning my skimmer down for the first 4 days. Good idea?
3) I was also going to stop my 1% automatic daily water changes for those 4 days as well.
(4 days as it looks like the metro is viable for up to 48 hours with the last dose on the 3rd day? )

Then on day 5 kick the Skimmer back into gear along with the water changes and slap on the filter socks. Possibly not start the carbon dosing back up until after day 14.

The only thing that should change is if someone is running GAC that will have to be removed as it will remove the medication.
I agree to stop the water changes during treatment.
It is unsure how long the lifespan of metronidazole is but it is an assumption of 24 hours but I do believe this will be dependant on the microbial life load.

Looking good so far. I'll get a sample under the scope tonight. By tomorrow night it should be a nice thick red mat.

Pictures transfering and videos uploading! I love the microscopic world.

But warning this will make you either never want to stick your hand in the water again (wearing gloves is a good idea) or go buy a microscope.

Just an explosion of life. Dinos swarming around as expected. Cyano snaking in and out of itself. Nematodes, pods, algal cells, diatoms, sponge, bacteria galore etc

The videos should be cool. Haven't seen them yet. But I was viewing through the eye pieces which actually gives me a closer up view then even what's seen in picture and video.
