Calling all Marine Biologists and reef hobby enthusiasts! I am still new to saltwater reef keeping, I'm cleaning my tank today and discovered what appears to be a coral growing out of my rock!!! I have a waving hand anthelia on the top of my rock in the first picture, then there's a small head of the same coral growing out from the rock in the second picture! How is this possible?! This is incredible!!!

I'm new too, and have the same thing. What happened was, being new a couple of months ago, my flow was WAY too strong. Blew a soft coral to shreds on the frag rack. I guess they landed in different parts of the tank, and grew there.

And looking at your pic, your flow is probably fairly strong too.

Oh snap! That's probably what happened to me as well! I gotta move that coral to a lower flow area. Thanks! Happy Reefing!

I can't wait until you both discover Kenya Trees.;)
I guess I underestimated the power of growth from the softies. I'm ecstatic because I went from melting all my xenia, and my waving hand in the beginning to this in a matter of months, but now I have a feeling they're gonna grow out of control.

Man I miss this feeling of descovering things that are really normal. Yes this happens sometimes if a part was cut off and landed somewhere else (as mentioned earlier). Also since xenias are considered invasive corals it’s a better idea to put it in a place where it can’t take over if you don’t want your whole rock work to be covered in Xenia . You will be truly fascinated by what this hobby still has to offer .

Yeah, like fish that disappear for months, just to show back up like nothing ever happened. Or those that just Houdini themselves permanently. It’s my favorite magic trick of the hobby

I had a convict damsel that somehow survived going over a J-tube overflow, through the drip-plate of a wet dry filter, and then lived in the remainder of the sump for YEARS. I had no idea he was there (thought he was lost) until breaking down the filter for cleaning and found him. He had grown so much he had to live on his side. Of course I moved him back to the DT, where he promptly attacked every fish in there lol
