I’ve got a 29g tall tank (30x18x12 inch), and am considering how to make an efficient scape.

The main issue is the footprint is fairly limited (30x12), so it’s difficult/ impossible to get rocks any higher than 9-10 inches, efficiently leaving the upper half of the tank empty

So, what are my options here?

Drilling all the rocks and thread them on a pvc tube?

Grind one side of a big, dry rock flat so it is stable and extends into the upper part of the tank?

Accept the limitations and stock fish swimming above the rocks?

Plan for a future reef with Gorgonians extending from the rock into the upper part of the tank?

Photos for inspiration is very welcome !!

The methods you mentioned above are all good ideas for your rock work .. personally I use aqua forest stone fix too glue all my rocks .. works perfect and drys fast can also be used under water .. it’s really what works best for you ..

A 12” front to back is the most annoying part. The best I’ve found is a wall structure with “bridges”. 1 big on the left, 1 big on the right and 1 big in the middle and then stack long flat-ish pieces on top. Don’t worry about only going up 10” or so, coral needs to grow as you see with my Purple Stylophora on the right.

Awesome tank, I love it!

I will have a look at the live rocks to see if I can make an interesting aquascape despite the lack of depth.

Thanks for the ideas

I have same problem with 12” front to back. How you solved that problem? Small rocks?

I got 7 lbs of live rock in now, expect around 12 to the right in a few days.

I intentionally left the water level low to ease the work with the new rocks and will be fully starting the cycle when they are in

I don't plan on going with corals anytime soon, so I will just have to live with the dimensions of the tank. I can only stack rocks to a certain height, even with the help of various glues etc.

With that said, I'm very satisfied with the first rocks I got, I managed to make multiple caves and pass-throughs, I hope the next batch of rocks is equally good, and I can make an interesting scape
