Thats why its always best to have no less than two systems so that you have a backup if things go south, and no more than two systems so you’re not overworking yourself :D

Have two systems. Make them big.
Well a 75 and a 100 will have to be big enough….funny thing people who don’t have tanks think they are huge….and I’m like “not really” lol

Thinking I’m gonna have to leave the gonis in the 75 for a while as the ones I’ve moved aren’t as happy in the new tank. Gonna end up putting them back in the 75 this weekend if they don’t look happier…….

Besides the gonis and the zoas everything else is happy in the new tank……need to finish getting all the other stuff over and then play the “to catch a fish” game

Haha no joke about the size perspective. I picked up a 75 gallon at petco a few days ago for my new refugium haha

Someone - who does have a salt water tank- thought my 40gal sump was large….i laughed……

And really the 40g sump only brings the total water volume on the 100g to 110ish? Rocks and sand displace a lot of water lol

FINAL SCORE

@Brisk - 5
@Thuan - 4
@Stang67 - 1

Congratulations to @Brisk on winning two Reef Moonshiners ICP test kits!!!

Next game and prize coming up around noonish CT tomorrow.

For this sale, each person is allowed one prize, and you must have purchased shipping to qualify for prizes. However, in the event that you win a second, third, etc prize, you will be allowed to pick which one you keep, and the runner up will get the prize you do not keep. This will be important because I have a wide variety of gifts, including anything from ICP test kits to dosers pumps, protein skimmers, media reactors, etc. Lots of different fantastic prizes this sale, and the larger, more expensive items will all be given out on the day of the sale.

So, get the pregame prizes in your pocket and know that you've already won already, then shoot to trade out for something else that you might be more interested in on the day of the sale.

The calculation tells you a lot. So, let's take the standard 75 gallon tank for instance. The exterior dimensions are generally 48'x18"x21". To find out the volume in gallons, you use this equation:

(L x W x H) / 231 = Gallons
(48 x 18 x 21) / 231 = 78.55 gallons (aka a standard 75 gallon tank)

Now, let's take an actual tape measurer to the internal dimensions that will actually be holding the water and not measuring the plastic trim nor thickness of glass:

(L x W x H) / 231 = Gallons
(47.25 x 17.25 x 20.5) / 231 = 72.33 gallons

That's not too bad. Still, an 8% reduction in volume, but not much. Now, lets look at the fact that that calculation is based off filling the tank to the brim. Realistically, the tank will be at about 18-19" of actual water height, so let's split the difference and go with 18.5". Here's the new math:

(L x W x H) / 231 = Gallons
(47.25 x 17.25 x 18.5) / 231 = 65.28 gallons

Now, we are at a more realistic number, which is actually 17% less than if you were using the original outside dimensions. Mind you, this is before we talk water displacement from rocks, sand, the massive, gorgeous SPS colonies y'all are all successfully growing without any headaches or troubles whatsoever, etc. Realistically, your average, standard 75 gallon reef tank display has probably around 45 gallons of actual water in it. Just something to keep in mind when calculating how much to dose or how much GFO to put in the media reactor. Always best to start off assuming you have half the number of gallons you think you have then ramp up from there.

The single biggest reducer in water volume for most aquariums is water level. Taller tanks with smaller footprints suffer less from this, but most people tend to have tanks with larger footprints and shallower heights. Shallower tanks are more suitable for reef tanks because they allow more real estate and require less light to provide adequate PAR.

I laughed at this…although -knock on wood- the SPS I have added are doing well encrusting and have great PE (in the 75). The new tank, well it’s just that….new. Eventually I’ll switch my nifty KH Keeper plus over to the new tank because I plan on moving the majority of the SPS and LPS to that tank and I’ll go back to having to test Dkh on the 75 and adjust if needed.

I run my tanks maybe an inch shy of the top. And have always based dosing off of the original tank volume + 5 gallons. The 75 has a 40 breeder sump. This math has done me well - so total volume 80g. When I set it up I did not keep track of how much water I added. I did with the 100gallon + 40 breeder. I have since added more rock (to the sump) So I base my dosing off of 100g in volume. Seems to be working well. I still generally dose less then the max for my volume and wait and test and watch….seemed like the smart way to go.

In some ways I wish I would have gone shorter on the new tank and wider. But at 22” tall (21” of water) it allows me to (hopefully) have some lower par on the sand ….i need to test that and figure it out though.

I think tanks just look bigger to non hobbyists while we the hobbyists just want even bigger tanks…or more tanks….or both….need room for all the pretty!!

Man, this back and forth between hot and cold here has the whole city in some stage of a cold. I got it bad, then my wife, now it's kinda back to me. Most of my extended family got it, etc. It's not enough to put you out of commission, but just enough to annoy you throughout your day and slow you down haha
Same! We have a horse farm and even the horses are getting colds. Fish are okay so far, though. lol

Oh I wait to kill my sps colonies until they’re a good 8-10” across then have a decent little crash. It’s kinda my thing.

My display is 60x24x24 but it would have been nice to have maybe 30” or 36” front to back. I would never go deeper than 24” though. I’ve got a good wingspan and it’s still kinda tough to get to certain spots in my tank as it is.

I feel this to my soul. I bought what was supposed to be a 180 gallon tank from a guy out of state. It was the whole system, fish and all. Didn't look closely during pickup (it was chaos, tank weighs 400 lbs empty), and when I got it home it was 29" deep, and actually a 210. It's also 8' high with stand, so I can't reach bottom unless I'm doing a big water change and on a 10' tall ladder. (I'm 5'2") ARGHHHH (And don't even get me started on the 2 foot glass brace in the middle of the top of the tank.) pic to show size perspective of me and this beast of a tank.

I have a 65 and 180. I'm 5'3". I have a stepping stool by each tank.
