Hi, there. I have a clownfish that I've had for a couple months and noticed today what looks like a red spot on his gill. He does get picked on a bit by the female but concerned about location. He's acting normally and eating well. Posting a pic and video to get your thoughts. Thanks!

On the video around the 16 second mark when he turns his head away it looks like something is sticking out. Nothing showing on the other fish or this guy's other gill.

Is that the only spot on him? It could be a bite mark from aggression

That would be my first guess as well, bite mark. If he is acting normally I'd just keep an eye on it and not worry too much.

I have a pair of Maroons and during the first attempt at pairing the female did something very similar.

Thanks for the replies! It is the only spot but this morning it's looking more like something is sticking out (maybe just a piece of skin) and I think I'm noticing a bit of yawning. It would be really helpful if he would just stay still for a minute! I'll keep a close watch on him this morning and see if he really is yawning or it's just me being paranoid.

If he’s yawning then I would do a FW dip to check for flukes.

I just watched the video and caught the lump at the :16 mark and now I don’t think that’s a bite mark. I would definitely FW dip him.

Also, the tank the clown is in only has one other clown, some trochus snails, and a few blue leg hermits. So, wondering if I should treat the tank with Prazi just in case.

I would do the dip to see if it’s flukes, there are viral lesions also called clownfish pimples.

Messages crossed. Yes, will do a FW dip (thanks for the video - haven't done that before so very helpful). Should I follow that with Prazi?

Treating with Prazipro wouldn’t hurt, dose it twice 5-7 days apart. Doing the dip will help and let you know if this flukes or pimples, etc
Aerate heavily as Prazi depletes O2

Lastly if you have a large population of bristleworms, feather dusters, etc Prazi May kill them off and possibly cause an ammonia spike. I would get a couple bottles of biospira just in case.

FW dip completed - just went ahead and did both the clowns in the tank. Somewhat inconclusive in my mind. I think I noticed a few little white dots at the bottom of the chamber and noticed a white spot by the one gill but I don't really know what I'm doing so it could have been just stuff in the water. Anyway, no bristleworms or feather dusters so am treating the tank with PraziPro now. Put in some extra aeration. Let's hope that does the trick and my little guy heals up. Thanks so much for the help.

Update: Looks like that did the trick. All healed up and not hiding as much. :)
