Hey everyone,

I have a hammer and frogspawn coral that I’ve had for about 6 weeks. When I first got them, they both opened up and looked great but within the last 2 weeks they stopped opening.

Does anyone know what would cause this? I haven’t done anything differently, I did a 25% water change yesterday. I’ve attached pictures of the coral from today. I don’t have any from before. Let me know what you think I should be doing.

Hi can you list your water parameters please? How old is your tank? What kind of lights and flow is in the tank? Can you post a picture in white light please, so we can see better. The coral doesn’t look bad in the pic that I can see. It could be just acclimating to your tank, this can take time, but if you provide more info we can check things off

I've read a lot of folks see this after water changes. All the tank params and age of tank will get you much more help... but they don't look bad to me there, just not 100% happy.

The tank is about little over 2 months old. I used Dr. Tim’s when I was cycling with clowns. I’m using 2 lominie s-120s.

Ive attached pictures of the water parameters and pictures of the coral with the blue lights off.

My water temp is 78.2 and I’m using a HOB aquaclear filter. I do not have a sump or a protein skimmer.

First Coral Help Please!!

So probably just panicked but got my first coral today. After a short drive home I acclimated the coral and dipped it before adding to the tank. It was grayish in color before I got home. Is this normal stress reactions or is it dying? Green in the store

Thanks!

Your nitrates are really low near as I can tell. Raising them a bit may help in keeping hammers happy.

This is a leather and they are super hard to kill. Give it a little bit of time in your tank and it should start to open given that you have good water parameters. Can you share your water parameters? What do you have for lighting and flow?

Haha good to chat with ya again!

For anyone willing to read this message I definitely identify beginner so anything that can help me understand what I’m doing. Wrong is horribly appreciated.!!!

So checked all my parameters and phosphate is a little higher than I wanted (.16) but everything else seems okay. Ammonia is very close to or at zero, nitrite 0, nitrates 1ppm or under. Temp is 78 (very steady) and salinity is 1.0255 with a mix of red sea salt and redsea pro salt using RODI. For lighting I have two reef led 160s on arms over a glass lid. Running a skimmer, hob with gfo and carbon media added, two 1100gph flow heads, and a 750gph pump for my UV sterilizer. The only other issue I’m fighting right now is some diatoms due to it being a new tank in my stupidity of getting a sand sifting goby so early (love him though). Alk 7.5 dkh, 440 calcium, 1320 mg, 8.1ph.

I’m using nopox sparingly, dosing bacteria daily, and weekend doses of phytoplankton.

Fenbendazole was used at tank setup more than 4 months ago with current live rock and sand.

Pick of placement for thoughts.

Sorry, adding one thing, I do not know the store parameters that the coral came from and I also have this 23K light cycle turned down from 100 to 75 at the moment
