I'm not sure I can answer that, but it seems to me that the word "nutrients" is less intimidating to a novice.


Pollutants make me feel like I shouldn't have any in my tank, while nutrients make me feel like I shouldn't have too many but not too few.

He says many people will disagree with this and that he also did for years because he believed that the solution to pollution was dilution which is achieved by doing a water change but he hasn't done one in 2.5 years.

It can be the same thing. Can also be different. Depends on context

Fish waste is a pollutant but it’s also nutrition for corals.

Windex would be a pollutant. A much different type.

If it isn't already known Mr. Saxby isn't promoting anything. It was an interview. He was asked a question and answered it. He has been keeping saltwater for well over 50 years and freshwater a good many prior. His system is designed to do water changes and used to do them frequently as he mentioned in the video. The overall system design is pretty amazing based on the space available compared to some of the other large home systems we see today. He has been fun to observe over the years.

OP - there are methods out there that do not do water changes but they are designed to accommodate it. Right or wrong, what is best, better, I don't know. Triton is one. DSR has one. Moonshiners I believe is also one. Probably more. DSR does not require ICP or didn't the last I recall and has been pretty popular over in Europe or maybe just with the Dutch. Triton and Moonshiners do require ICP.
