Reef Moonshiners:
I was moving too fast when I was dosing. The lid to my Reef Moonshiners Nano Copper fell off over my sump. I wasn’t watching but heard a gulp and realized I had the plastic cap on my 1 mil syringe and the bottle poured some out directly into my sump. If I had to guess 50 - 75 ML of Nano Copper poured out, maybe less. Totally my fault. I have enough water made to do a couple large water changes. I also have enough RO on hand to have plenty on hand in a few hours.

Thoughts?

Did you immediately stop the return pump? Keeping as much as possible in your sump? Otherwise if it is already in the display, I would stick to waterchanges

Waterchanges it is :( Any inverts who are prone to copper? Would recommend to get them out ASAP. Coming days keep an eye on ammonia as you might have some die off from snails and other inverts.

Would also check the copper levels to determine how bad the situation is. Copper might get in your rocks and sand and leach out over time.

I’m going to do a test hourly for the next few hours in both the sump and display. Both reading zero. I’m going to do a 40% water change now and again tomorrow. Waiting for the water to get to temp in my garage.

hanna HR copper is not really accurate for lower tests under 1.0.

Not sure if they say how much it should increase copper by related to your size tank and how much got dosed?
I heard a gulp of a splash. It was the motion of me turning it upside down and back and realizing the cap was on my syringe not the bottle, what an idiot. I was dosing 3 ML a day. This is the nano. So very diluted (thank goodness). I probably put in a 30 day supply…

Changed nearly 50% of the water. Everything very very happy. My “canary in the coal mine” is my Duncan, and it’s totally out. I’m going to do a series of water changes over the next 7 days and then run another ICP perhaps. I really hope I didn’t muck stuff up. But, big big lesson learned.

Just for reference, with ICP copper is usually measured in micrograms per liter or ppb, so your Hanna meter won’t help. The Hanna has an accuracy of +-0.05 ppm.

I would expect that the bottle probably would be used to raise copper a couple ppb at most. Even if it raised it to 10ppb that’s 0.01ppm. Now if there’s enough in there to raise it 100ppb or 0.1ppm, that could be more of an issue, and possibly still not measure accurate on your Hanna. How much does it tell you to dose on a regular basis; and how much does it raise your copper? That would give you an idea of the total in the bottle.

In the meantime you probably should get an ICP and continue with the water changes like you planned. Polyfilter can also be a help.

If they tell you the concentration, that would help. Otherwise, just throw in a bag of cuprisorb or similar.

Adding @Spare time

In total I have switched out 80% of the water. I’ll do another 40% tomorrow. I reached out to Andre EL Moonshino and he stated that I shouldn’t dose for 7 days and then start back up. I’m not sure what to make of that scientific evaluation. Ironically I did a ICP the day before this happened. I ordered another and will do it when it gets here. Everything in the tank is super happy. I’m in the middle of a tank consolidation so this system is living in a stock tank. You can see the build below in my sig.

Test before reacting and add cuprisorb (copper remover) if needed
