several of my fish have this look after flatworm Exit treatment 7 days ago. These 2 fish appear to be somewhat blind also. Can’t eat unless something bumps them right on the mouth then eats it.

Not velvet, they have been going with this for at least 6 days now. Fish were fine for years until I used flatworm Exit for an outbreak. Did everything by the book but appeareny the flatworm poison was great enough to cause this outbreak in most of my fish 1 day after dosage.

Look up the difference between velvet and Ich. You have velvet.

I am looking for advice and appreciate the help. Problem is I had velvet many years ago. Fish will not make it a day or two with velvet. These guys are going on day 6 and still eating when they can bump into it.

Never heard of ammunity to velvet but either way, no way to catch and QT all the fish. Plus the stress of ripping up a 165 gallon tank to catch. Any thoughts humblefisb?

You should treat all fish now with copper. If you can't, a lot of your fish are going to die if not all.You could try a diatom filter to suck up the free swimmers, thats if the fish survive the parasite life cycle infestation. That's bad they need copper.

Yes I agree it’s ugly. But again to catch 10 fish and put them in a 20 gal hospital tank isn’t feasible. When I did get velvet in a prior tank and was able to catch a couple tangs right when the showed symptoms, they were dead the next morning in copper. I believe the stress of chasing them for hours makes the treatment futile as this point. Plus they have had it going on 7 days so they are probably too weak to handle the trauma. It sucks. Like my other post say’s, don’t believe you can follow flatworm directions to the t and not have issues. Every tank is different.

It should pass with little to no losses since your fish had ich already. However no guarantee!

The best thing you can do is provide as much of a stress free environment as you can. Perhaps leave the lights off for a day. Try to feed them as much as possible to keep them healthy, if they do too long without eating their immune system will break down further.

Good luck.

The poison from the flatworms dying was enough to stress out the fish enough for the parasites to take hold.

If nothing has been added in 4 years, then your fish had an immunity (and the parasites) but stress has overwhelmed their immune system and voila unfortunately.

Treatment is likely their only chance.

Aside for treatment, my reluctance to velvet even though it appears that, I have always know velvet to kill a fish once you see signs, in 1 or 2 days. My prior tank had velvet and each fish would die overnight and the entire tank was gone in 1 week. They have all looked similar to Thai for a week now. The do eat, however, some appear to be somewhat blind. They swim around exited when I feed but won’t go after food. If it happens to come right by their mouth they suck it in quick. Flake seems to be the easiest for them to catch. Our hobby is full of ups and down. My gut said don’t use the flatworm exit but most post made it sound like as long as you follow the directions it will turn out well.

Those fish look pretty well advanced with the disease. Especially after what you described as blindness. Freshwater dip, acriflavin dip and treat with copper or CP. obviously you will need a QT larger than a 20 gallon. A 55 might get you by. Tearing the tank down to catch the fish is a PIA. But it’s either that or watching them die.

It’s not a disease, FYI
