I have just moved my Mombassa Lionfish out of my standard quarantine setup - two weeks with Chloroquine Phosphate and no biofiltatration into a new QT for observation and prazi deworming.

Unfortunately in the observation and deworming tank I can see a spot attached to his eyeball. Having dealt with ich in the past this looks very similar or possibly flukes. Body and tail look clear. Rather suprised a parasite has made it through Chloroquine as it's pharmacy grade and has never happend before when used.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be really appreciated.

A close-up provided was really helpful. I dont see although partial body in pic anything suggesting ich or flukes however keep an aye on fish for symptoms such as elevated breathing, sudden darting across tank, loss of appetite or dots.
May be a slight scratch which shoul heal on its own. If it increases in size, treat in separate tank using maracyn as pictured

I would say - thats not a standard quarantine protocol 'here' - so it's hard to comment - obviously you missed something....

PS - of course - its hard to see spots here - but - I would say - its unlikely for Ich to display as one spot. You can watch the fish for others.

PS - I meant to mention flukes - I would suggest thats the same - however if you see clouding of the eye, etc worsening - I would approach that - though chloroquine should have cured this if your level was correct

Thanks for the reply. So I will keep an eye and see how it develops. I have included a more full body shot, there is no spots, loss of appetite or darting occurring.

I am currently running them thorough a prazipro treatment so that hopefully covers flukes. My standard quarantine is taken from Humblefish using Chloroquine rather than Copper for two weeks before moving to a new QT for deworming.

While it could be flukes, I’ve had issues with chloroquine causing eye problems that look like cataracts. CP can also apparently cause retinal issues:

That, combined with unexpected mortality in lionfish and wrasses had me remove it from my treatment rotation.

Thanks for providing this study Jay, I was not aware of the potential for eye problems unfortunately.

I also have a QT with copper power so will possibly look at switching to that in the future. I use Chloroquine due to a number of eels I keep in my tank which QT well with it.
