I have used multi-sump systems in the past. Either through having them at different heights and having one drilled that drains to the bottom one or by creating a "bridge" between the two sumps via PVC but in that case both need drilled. Could also pump from a sump into a "refugium sump" that had an overflow back to the sump (or into display if it was above the display). Countless ways to do it though.

Not the best pic, but this is the same thing I did. Right side with skimmer then refugium drains to left side where GFO and return pump are located.

I have 2 in my basement, DT on first floor. Only way to go for me. Basement is what I'm referring to. No water and buckets all over and around the tank. blaa blaa blaa. Anyway my 2 sumps are a Trigger Cube, and a 20gal. The trigger is first it does all of what I would say is the cleaning, then is pumped thru my UV and into my 20gal. The 20 gal has another filter sock, cause why not I guess. And is used mostly for a HOB reactor some other filter media a spot for my larger return pump. The pump from trigger to 20gal at one time was my main return pump pushing water back to my DT but I felt like it was a lil bit undersized. Go Big on that return pump. If you can get it to good flow back at only half speed or so, you will deff. extend the life of it.

I am currently building a 2 part sump for my big tank. I am using 3 4" pvc bulkhead fittings between my sump boxes. The are attached with 4" unions. I have a stand that goes over the pipes and unions to cover them and my nitrate reactor sits in that as well as my trident. Hope that helps
