Hello all,

First timer here, I been in the fresh water tank world for about 15 years growing up. I recently have been fascinated with the salt water world and ready to get into the hobby. Any tips or recommendations is greatly appreciated!

I will be starting off with a 29 gallon tank from pet smart.

With that I will be having the following equipment;
  • TopFin Silenstream PF30
  • Dual head AQQA wave maker
  • RO Buddie 4-stage
  • Live rock and sand from LFS
  • Looking at Red Sea Salt
  • Nicrew HyperReef 100w with controller
  • 100w Heater
  • API Salt Water Master Test Kit
I am planning on using PlastiDip on the back of the tank to make it black.

I will be using Fritz Turbo start and Dr Tim’s Ammonia Chloride to start the cycle, and once my ammonia and nitrites are zero’s. I plan to add a pair of clowns and a CUC. A few months down the line I will begin to add corals.

Cheers,

Did you buy all the equiptment yet?

It looks like a good start for a budget tank but I would personally use Jeabo Sow-4 powerhead and a Seachem HOB filter, it surface skims and has a large basket to put whatever media you want in it. Jeabos are controllable, generally reliable, and will have a magnet mount.

If the rock is truly live, like WET and full of bacteria/cycled, you do not dose ammonia or bacteria with it. If it is DRY rock, then proceed.

If you do red sea salt, I would do the blue bucket.

Before purchase, consider an all in one or reef ready setup which will be more supportive of maintenance, sea life, biological and chemical filtration. Hate to see you invest in this 29g and experience unexpected headaches

IM has an affordable AIO, definitly worth considering. It won't grow coral any better (a glass box is a glass box) but it will look very nice and you won't have the hang on back filter noise.
