Formate has become pretty popular to dose. It's the alk part of Tropic Marin All for Reef and carbocalcium.

Which of the following is the structure of formate? Note: all of these are used in reef tanks.

I suppose my honest answer is I don’t know without looking it up. While I was top my Pchem class to the annoyance of the chemistry majors, I fear those brain cells were long ago cannibalized for other uses. That’s how brains work right?

addon question:

Assign these compounds to the structures posted by Randy:

Glycine (a amino acid)
Acetate

:) Happy researching!

Physical chemistry was (and is) my favorite of the chemistry sub topics. So many of the p-chem topics were intuitive and seemed like something I should have been able to think up on my own. That was never the case for topics like organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, etc. It wasn't until the very advanced classes in P-chem where it became far more math than science that it lost its appeal. Fortunately, I never have to use that in the real world.

My wife likes to tell a story from our early years when I was taking a quantum mechanics class in grad school. I apparently had a nightmare about eigenvectors (one of those math chemistry concepts beyond any normal human understanding). I was apparently pointing at the foot of the bed and was saying things like "The eigenvector. Don't you see it..." We'd been married less than a year at that point, and it scared her quite a bit. Probably made her rethink the whole thing. Fortunately, she hung in there and is downstairs making Christmas cookies. lol

I liked Pchem. I would not go so far as to say it was intuitive for me. I found it really difficult. I’m just very competitive :)

This is the 1st one of these questions that I couldn't even make a educated guess. But I'll try, my guess is "D". Because it's the only one with N and i know there's a connection between alk and N. I'm assuming the N gets consumed to produce the Alk..
