Hey guys, I joined this site shortly after I purchased my Red Sea 750 xxl tank. I didn’t realize the world of issues and work and money that went into the tank. I purchased the tank and other equipment thinking that’s all I needed until I realized that’s not the case. I recently have been dealing with the Ich/velvet issue which I lost more than 6/8 of my fish. I’m thinking of emptying my reefer tank and switching back to a freshwater tank. Any suggestions or ideas would help. Would I need any additional filters or can I use my tank as is?! Anything would help greatly. Thank you.

I'm new to saltwater but have a lot of freshwater experience. Freshwater is a lot more forgiving in some ways. You can definitely use your tank for freshwater as is. BUT if it were me, I would ditch the filter socks simply because they are overkill for freshwater. Frankly I would pull the sump rather then modify it, put in a cheap glass aquarium that fit in the space, and use some matten filter as the entirety of mechanical filtration. No baffles, keep all the water at the same level throughout the sump. I'd either store the sump in case I decided to give salt another try, or sell it to recoup some of my losses.

Any lights you have will likely not be great for freshwater. Either too strong or wrong spectrum or both. So you would want to look into different lighting, especially if this is going to be used with live plants.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck!
