I fall into the #1 category! I had a heater burst in a 125g and killed a lot of my corals. :(

Rev, very true.. I wil say, I have been very lucky to not lose a tank completely full of corals due to a major disaster, but have had many ups and downs in my time. I would say most are in #1. it makes us better reefkeepers.

I guess I technically fall under category #1, but it was more of a disaster during a tank move, rather than things going bad while it was all set up. The heater malfunctioned while corals were in a Rubbermaid, and with no chiller to counteract (or at least slow down the heat-up), everything got fried. Sad day :(

I guess I'm number 1 for a couple reasons

I had a heater fail in my Vickie tank killing about 40 cichlids. Had about 6 left.

I had all of my parameters crash overnight (why I have no idea) and almost everything died overnight (except fish).

I had a tank bust a leak and lost about 80% of my coral in the transfer process.

1 for me too. The temp probe from my controller was pulled out of the water somehow and turned the heaters and kept the tank at 95+ for a while. I lost nearly all of my coral. Since then I purchaced a temp controller and plug it into my aquarium controller for double protection.

#1 for me, although not for a few years. I had a stealth heater fail on me a couple years ago, but was lucky enough to catch it right away. My main problems over the years were attributed to sticking float switches that caused salinity or pH swings.

#1 4 me2...My tank literally crashed..actually twice...

Just bought this 90 gal with a nice canopy and everythiung, the person sold their fish too. I had a HUGE yellow tang, flame angel, huge anthias, 3 huge green chromis and I think that was it. There were alot of cords under the tank, and I was use to biocubes... So we plugged everything in.......and the next day everyhting was dead..we forgot toplug in the actual pump..so the fish suffocated(probably spelled wrong)

Then after we restocked thats tank; we had tons of corals and fish in it. After many many fights with ich, we finally beat it!! Then one night at 12.... BAMM CLANK CRSHH PSHHHHHH and ,running in the dinnig room(on wood floors), I notice the bottom left half of the tank's seal broke, 90 gal of water going straight into the stand and on the floor. I call the lfs owner and they ,nicely, open the store at now 1am to take our livestock in attempt to save them. We come back home and put the rocks, sand, and the what is left of water in a barrel. We go to the lfs the next week and all of the fish got ich from the stress and died:cry:

I don't believe that a tank crash is inevitable. Very common but not unavoidable. I think they are caused by mistakes and unforseen calamities and are not guaranteed to happen. I have only been running my current tank for 5 years and I hope I'm correct when I say we are not doomed to a crash.

I hope we are not all doomed to have a crash. Has Paul had a crash in the 40 years his tank has been up?

Never a full tank crash here, but when I first started with coral I jumped right into sps and had 12 frags I got from local guys. I lost like 8 in a 2 week span cause I was still learning the alk thing.

Has Paul had a crash in the 40 years his tank has been up?

I am not sure if I would call it a crash but I did lose almost all of my corals twice when my town added zinc orthophosphate to the water supply right near my house. A large LFS a few blocks from my house also lost their corals that day.
I never lost the fish.
