Hi

I might be able to get a 40" sump for my first build (noob here). However, total length of my stand inside is 48", so just 8" left for other stuff.
Question is if this would be a mistake?
I'm thinking ATO would be included in the sump.

Should be fine. You could always put the ato next to your tank if needed. Make sure there is plenty of height clearance in your stand for the sump though. Always a pain to clean the sump in tight spaces.

My sump takes up most of my stand. I use a 20 gallon reservoir that sits next to the stand and a separate storage cabinet to store everything else.

My clearance is 10 between top of sump to the top of the stand, 6 from the top of the sump to the bottom of the top cross piece. Its tight, but certainly do able. Not much wiggle room to pull the skimmer cup is all. Plus can't integrate an ATS above the sump as I wouldn't have minded trying.

I don't have any cross pieces, so same clearence everywhere.
I think I can manage with 10,5".

You'll be fine... you'll end up with more room than I have actually. Ignore the wire mess... I was cleaning the sump and haven't tied everything back up yet:

Can you take the bottom off the stand to put the sump on the ground?
Won't be easy. I know the bottom has several braces across.
I think 10" will be fine for general stuff, but removing skimmer might be difficult.
Maybe I should build a quick model and see how it feels.

That's not a bad idea...to build a quick model. The skimmer will be the biggest limiting factor. You want to know the exact height the skimmer will be in the sump and ensure you can remove the top cup and the skimmer itself if required.

Yes. A kind reef2reef member has just given me the measurements of the cup height on the skimmer I'll likely choose, and rest is listed on the companys website. Should be easy, to create a decent model, and test if I'm pushing it or it will work without to much screwing around.
