Pretty cool... but I wonder why they choose to use the old heavy lead acid batteries inside? You would think they would have used newer battery technology for the guts of this thing.

i dont know why that article is like this is a new thing lol Battery backups have been around for decades in the PC industry, infact i use an APC battery backup for my reef tank

Cool! They had one out a few years back that was similar, at least on the surface....but it was already discontinued before I found out about it.

I suspect that it was based on NiMH batteries at that time – seems like lots of products using NiMH were cancelled, even ones that were brand newish. Licensing?

old heavy lead acid batteries

From the summary at W:
The lead–acid battery was invented in 1859 by French physicist Gaston Planté and is the oldest type of rechargeable battery. Despite having a very low energy-to-weight ratio and a low energy-to-volume ratio, its ability to supply high surge currents means that the cells have a relatively large power-to-weight ratio. These features, along with their low cost, make them attractive for use in motor vehicles to provide the high current required by automobile starter motors.

As they are inexpensive compared to newer technologies, lead–acid batteries are widely used even when surge current is not important and other designs could provide higher energy densities. Large-format lead–acid designs are widely used for storage in backup power supplies in cell phone towers, high-availability settings like hospitals, and stand-alone power systems. For these roles, modified versions of the standard cell may be used to improve storage times and reduce maintenance requirements. Gel-cells and absorbed glass-mat batteries are common in these roles, collectively known as VRLA (valve-regulated lead–acid) batteries.

I was actually looking for a small generator when I bumped into the old Duracell unit.

I suspect that most folks don't need the extra PC-oriented features that UPS's come with (software, extra holes for PC stuff, etc)....and run-times are typically really small on a lot of PC UPS's.

As long as none of that's actually in the way and you understand how PC UPS's are marketed, they work (as you know) about how you'd expect. ;)

Does yours let you hook it up to a solar panel array like this one?

It’s more common in cars I belive and a more common less expansive tech worldwide.
So in case of zombie apocalypse, you can use a dozen car batteries and expand storage capacity and keep it charged with a solar array.

A fwiw, you can drain and fill a lead acid battery to recondition it. We just don’t do that here in the ya anymore.

That's neat. But yeah...lead acid!? That thing's probably over 100 pounds. You could probably do this yourself with a car battery and a simple power inverter for half that price.

It’s about 350 to diy as I priced it. Depends mostly on the battery. That’s going with the “best” stuff available on eBay. Lol.

I just had a thought, it's completely impractical due to cost but I'm gonna throw it out there anyway and then someone else can do it and make money (Send me one if you do)

Backup battery systems that are designed to sit under a sump! My sump is 24x24". It would only be say 3-4" high, but that gives you tons of space for batteries. Then it is as simple as one outlet on the front for input to keep it charged and one (or more) that go out to your equipment/controller. You could parallel them and use a couple for a larger system, etc.

I was wondering the same. I know that airline regulates large lithium ion batteries and that plays part in why the smaller 18650s are found so common even in large applications where a bigger battery could be developed. more often I find companies like milwaukee where more 18650s are tied in series rather then using a bigger manufacturered battery

I have deep cycle batteries for my boat. they run about $150 a pop maybe a bit more. a good 1000 watt inverter will set you back ~$50-$100 or so. you can get much larger deep cycles than what I have and parallel them together. a decent solar array to charge my batteries will set me back a few Hundred.
