Today I went to buy a couple frags from a local reefer. He had a decent tank and everything looked healthy. He had a smaller colony of what looked like a white acro and a couple frags for $10 so figured Id give it a try. Its not a dead coral - though it almost looks like it because of the color. He didn't know what it was called but appears to have white tissue with tiny dark polyps that don't extend out much. I suppose it could be bleached but the rest of his Acros looked good. I couldn't find an ID of this. Any ideas?

Its toward the back so I can't zoom in very good. Its the frag right below the purple tang obviously.

Yeah probably so just seems odd that he said its always looked that way and is growing and the rest of his Acros all look healthy. Guess will see if it darkens up in my tank.

I like to give bleached corals something like reef energy, aquavitro fuel, or similar dissolved foods to help them out.

There are some white-ish looking acros out there but not white like a dead coral

It's not bleached. It looks like a Reef Ready Grape Juice Acro which is whitish with purple polyps in high par. I had one in 2018 and might be able to find a pic.

I’m pretty sure I bought a pink birdsnest from this same guy (in Nampa?) and it was nearly white (saw this acro also). Over several weeks it started getting more and more pink, unfortunately I was out of town a bunch last month I had some alk issues (and also found a rusty magnet on a wavemaker) and it died. His tank didn’t look bad at all and he’s clearly getting growth, but think his lighting just isn’t very intense (it looked like maybe a couple 24” twin bulb T5 fixtures or a couple 24” LED strips on a 36” tank), so I would expect it to color up (but would be careful not to give it too much light too quickly).

Yeah same guy/coral. I’ve blasted it with light and it definitely looks different in my tank. It’s also growing fast so I’m Happy to share a frag if you want another one.

just a follow up. I’ve had this acro for about 7 weeks now. While the body is still white-ish the tips are definitely darker now. Growing fast. Still not sure what it is.

Give it a fancy name then charge others 15x it’s retail price. Seems to be the trend now days.
