These cornered my fire shrimp and proceeded to eat him alive. They hitched on the live rock which came with my tank, they were probably collected on the florida coast.

Whelks or Nassarius snails are scavengers. Aquarists tend to think scavengers are predators when they see them eating something dying or dead. They are great detrivores however, enjoy them...
Are you sure they werent eating the Molt from your fire shrimp? I dont see how they could corner a live Fire Shrimp in your tank??
That would definitely make sense. I bet the shrimp molted and is in hiding until it hardens back up.
