You'll never need a leak detector for your reef aquarium, until you do! :p

How many of you have leak detectors and have they ever had to "alert" you?

Also are you using an aquarium brand detector or something else?

I don’t, but my Apex temperature probes are in the top section (4-6”) of the tanks. If the temp falls below a certain point (knock on wood), then there is a loud siren in the room, and I will get a notification on my phone.

No leak detectors, I think if a tank starts spraying, the alarm just lets you know your screwed faster. Other devices like your ATO would start beeping if you were losing too much water. I figure if it happens, let it happen and save what I can. Insurance can write me a big check and I will have fun redoing things. They pay out contractor rates and I can DIY so all of the house damage money beyond materials goes into the new tank.

I placed the one I had for the washing machine under the overflow drains. Set my video cam to detect smoke alarms. So ATO, Heater, leak detector alarms will alert the camera. Even if power goes out since I have the wifi (and return pump) on UPS. no leaks though.

I build my own from GFCI receptacles. They are under my tank and domestic water heater.

I take the neutral wire from the GFCI and a ground wire and lay it under my tank. If they get wet, it turns off my pumps and skimmer. I easily can make it alert me.

I'm sure it isn't legal, but I am an electrician and don't care. :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

I have a bunch of the neptune ones. They have detected water/moisture on many occasions.

Yes I use this one: YoLink great price and has other items you can add to the system which can be used to monitor sump water level as well.
It works amazingly and has already saved me a few times with a leaking bulkhead.

Oh yeah.

Frag tank is in a room that also has a sink and my water production. It's gone off a few times. Also have two around my display tank.

They all have a terrifying audible alert and my phone is notified also.

How do you like hydros vs apex

Hydros quality is massively better than Apex. Apex software and programming is much better than Hydros. The Apex program can go into far more detail too. But over time I expect Hydros to fix their software and make it better. Hydros instructions are lacking as well. They don’t even have any for multiple new products. Or others are copy and pasted from something else and half the info doesn’t apply.

The Hydros users are a rude cult though. So don’t expect to ask for help. They are diehard to defend Hydros and the issues it has. Even if you bring up legit criticisms they will tear you to shreds.

Back on topic. I use both Hydros and Apex detectors. I’ve had an apex one trip. I’ve tested my hydros rope sensor with a single drop of water and it triggered. Hydros rope sensor is awesome. Although I wish it was a braided flat mesh webbing.

I was looking at the Red Sea ato for the added leak detector but I’m now wondering if I’m better off with something else since I’m thinking of a controller too. I appreciate your input here, thank you

I have 3 leak detectors connected to the Profilux controller.
One on the floor at each end of the tank and another in the cabinet next to the sump.

If they detect a leak, they set off an alarm, send me an SMS and email, and then shut down the return pump, UV and skimmer.

It's tripped once when Mr Snoot, my big Scopas Tang decided he was going to try escape and sent a tidal wave over the edge of the tank. Fortunately not a leak
