Hey Brian I would check out amazon. They all do the same thing. No need for a 400$ refrac. And the one I bought years ago is still kicking at 40$!

much better accuracy!
if you need any help at all with anything please feel free to ask.
it can ruin a day when you find a pest or disease in your main tank
That might be a problem for me too. I still own a hydrometer lol. What is an affordable refractometer?
You don't want rock/sand in QT, as that will absorb (and leach back out) medications such as copper making it difficult to maintain a stable concentration. But absorption is minimal with something like a sponge in a HOB. And you'd be amazed by the large quantity of nitrifying bacteria a porous sponge is able to hold. Really makes for an effective bio-filter to help break down ammonia.
I've been using this one for 2-3 years now: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005ES6MOQ?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage
That $50 Marine Depot refractometer mentioned above is the one I was using before I got this one from Amazon. I really liked it; it was easier to read. But I dropped it on the floor and before I could order a replacement, my wife had already ordered that cheaper one off Amazon (slick). It takes a little getting used to - I think the numbers/lines are smaller on it - but it works perfectly fine.
