My buddy runs a welding business and offered to weld the stand. he said 2 inch square aluminum rods should be enough to hold the 500-700lbs of the 60gallon display with 40 gallon breeder.

is aluminum strong enough? is it a good choice?

Solid? Tubular? Wall thickness?

25mm T-slot is super common and would work fine. Welded aluminum is hard to predict what happens with the material.
