Ahh makes sense if you have the cleaner shrimp. If there is one thing with dinos it is never a one size fits all. I sent Todd a sample last week and he says there were none in the samples which is crazy to think after 10 or 11 months they are finally gone in my system. I hope your second batch of them don't last that long. You ever tried adding copepodes to consume the dinos? Between that and the UV I added a few months back, one of them or both along with peroxide may have helped. Hard to say as I did both around the same time. Article I came across that made me try once I got my Dino population low to that last pesky 5-10%

http://www.scienceisart.com/dockbook/a2012-09-Sep/a2012-09.html

not as much saving the cleaner. its that the constant stream of peroxide is always in the column working, and seems to be high enough doseage to keep things in check.

when i did peroxide bombs, sure. they would go away. but they would return soon after the dose was administered.

3 hours after reinitiating lights back on.(note the bubbles on the rock)

*dusting off ol trusty....

uv is installed again

some observations:

so far nothing looks threatened or will die.
testing the limits of it's hold in my tank.
cleaner shrimp is fine.
zoas and duncans stay closed during lights out.
lights on... business as usual.

im only going by 1 rule atm:
if a strand is in a corralite, baste and shut lights off immediately.

if you arent running peroxide. you will notice within 30-60 minutes how quick this stuff spreads.

also remember... it has a circadium rhythm. if it thinks it is night time, it goes in to free floating mode.

..... eventually
i can run my lights and this stuff will just be in a corner somewhere. withering away.

Have you ever tried dino x? I have also been battling dinos as well on my sand only. I did the 72 hours blackout out, uv, removed half layer of sand and dropped po4 to as low as possible before my softies and lps started to show stress. All was good for about a week and it's starting to come back, it is definitely not as bad. I read about dino-x and ordered it 2 days ago, should be here end of this week.

Hope it works for me... the strain I have looks like rust on my sand bed only. No stringy/gooey in mine. Twilliard did identify I have dinos.

just an update.
today was the first time i could run my light cycle fully.

only change was uv on top of the peroxide. uv is counter productive to peroxide mind you, but the 2 work hand in hand.

tank is holding at 76 degrees f

Newby that i am to reefing, id like to know why not run UV all the time?

you "can". and if i had a gem tang or something i would.

problem happens when the uv degrades the plastic housing. if the housing was titanium, then no issue.
however. depending on the housing and plastic's uv degredation, you can kill fish.

get a jebao or sunsun and it will happen within months. others... not so sure.

best to be careful with uv.

just an update.

dinos are getting knocked back as usual. there seemed to be some sort of lag before the peroxide caught up with the doseage.

it also didnt hurt that i added uv back to the system.

it IS still in my system, however it is under control and the reef is running normally again.

i believe my prior experience and knowing the doseage safe for my inverts helped make this transition easy.

i plan on burning this bottle (peroxide) up before going back to how it was.

i know it isnt as catastrophic or as bad a battle as the first, but it seems experience really made this a non issue.

so far i only lost the tip of one of my sps.

I seen it mentioned that uv light will kill dinoflagellates. I mainly have them on my glass and they have stayed in check for a while, but still show up after a few days. I have this uv wand:

http://www.verilux.com/uv-products/uvc-sanitizing-wand/

Do you think it would be possible to hold this up to the glass and kill the dinos? Or would the glass block too much of the uv? I could use a piece of corrugated plastic inside the tank to keep the uv from shinning into the tank (if that is even necessary).

really. bubbles are where those strands really form.

i personally believe that when they are in their night time mode of swimming around that they are most vulnerable. unfortunately this is in the water column.

zapping them on the glass will do little for you ime.

why did you put a reef in that

What are your mag levels at? I heard if you are up above 1400 it will starve out what they feed off?

not sure the strain. i can send some to twilliard if i ever get the chance. These are the same ones that wreaked havoc on my tank last year.

uv didnt help as much as peroxide but it DOES help.

some videos with the battle last year:

bubble phase....
https://vid.me/05fd

this was after the peroxide bomb (one and done approach)

stringy phase
https://vid.me/qFqx

close ups after some peroxide bombs
https://vid.me/3PrC

they interestingly died off when xfering to my wife's tank.

the approach i took with these guys the second time (small doses more frequently) only took 48 hours before the reef ran as normal. admittedly, i did catch it early.

was risky. but sucked out all my sand and did a wc. during the xfer of water, dinos were trying to take hold again.

rinsing my sand revealed a sludge i never want to share with anyone lol. so glad i sucked it (sand) all out.

vid of my tank. seems dinos just like my "newer" rock rubble to latch on to.

too lazy to find a turbo to bulldoze that tuft of gha.
