Can anyone recommend a good backup battery for a 36 gallon aquarium that’s not too expensive. Not sure which one to get. Then one I have isn’t working even with a new battery installed.

You should probably list the equipment you're hoping to power and for how long.
Heaters are usually a huge problem for "battery" backups.
DC pumps are easier.
I’m trying to run the light, heater and pump for. 36 gallon tank

You'll also want to list more specifically which heater, pump, light you have. Wattages make calculating how long a backup battery will hold you over much easier!

If you’re looking to keep a heater up in a cold house for more than an hour you need to be looking at generators. A small 1kVa pure sine generator weighs less than 40 pounds and can be had for under 700USD.

Running a pump is by far the most important. And you really only need motion within the tank.
