For that size tank, it just depends on the type of algae .

Snails might help, depending on the type. A pitho ot emerald crab. But those can go rogue too.

Manual removal and more frequent water changes might be the best option.

Tuxedo. Have one in a 7-gallon Deskmate for over a year now. Does take patience for it to mow through everything, so patience needs to be exercised there.

And make sure everything is glued down. Everything.

That size tank, do you have to glue it to the desk also?

I clean my glass two to three times a week. Unfortunately it's just a fact of reef tanks. I see my Ceriths and Trochus on my glass frequently. Nerites are there occasionally but mine tend to stay on the rocks more. Astrea snails and Margaritas go for glass as well.

Hermits can help with Hair Algae as well. I think Turbos are the best snails for Hair Algae I believe but there are others that will eat it.

I've always had great luck with tuxedo urchins regarding algae removal. However I had to get rid of mine because it liked to rip off palys from the plugs and ultimately decimate them.

I like the Tuxedo’s, in my experience they don’t go after the Coraline Algae as much as other Urchins. Need to stay away from Rock Boring Urchins, as they can damage your glass.

agreed.
scrub it and follow up with a water change. repeat as many times as necessary.
In extreme gha cases, if possible, i actually recommend pulling the highest rocks one by one, scrub the rock, follow up by dunking them in a pail of waste water or RODI to clear the loose gha and give them a good misting with peroxide in a sprayer, sit for 30 seconds and then return them to the tank.
this was the only method that allowed me to regain control of my extremely hairy tank

yea it usually collects in the same place you'd put SPS corals. The highest PAR with the best flow.
Fortunately it also makes it an easy fix and should you have to resort to peroxide, won't interrupt your liverock's cycle or water parameters.

I think tuxedo's are smaller, but the pincushion is by far one of the hardiest.

So if that died... something is up with your water chemistry, and probably wont be able to support a tuxedo.
Or it starved to death. Mine has done such a great job of cleaning up the tank I have to feed it occasionally. When it's on the front of the tank, I'll get it some nori, keeps it happy.

If it's bryopsis or turf algae, not much takes care of it.
I had a bad case of turf algae in a 88gal and two pincusion urchins scrubbed it clean in about 4 weeks. Now I'm a bit concerned they'll turn to the good stuff but they did their job.
