I just installed my UV sterilizer yesterday on my 150g tank. I think what the previous OP is saying is that these kinds of UV sterilizers (cheap and compact) don't yield very good results. I bought an Emperor Aquatics UV that is almost 4 feet long made out of 2" PVC. The UV chamber needs to be large enough to expose water to UV and many of these "compact" reactors just don't have the capacity to do so. If you're serious about a UV sterilizer, look into Pentair/Emperor Aquatics or AquaUV.

With UV it's about dwell time. How long the water is exposed to the light. It also has a lot to do with the UV bulb as well, wave length it produces.

Question really is why do you think you need one?

Most hobby grade units are only good to clarify water, in other words, reducing water born algae spores and reducing bacteria.

Parasites killing is another story. Hobby grade units lack the intensity to do real damage to them, this a poor way to approach parasite control.

I do agree, and I would use it mainly like flippers said, to clarify water, reducing water born algae spores and reducing bacteria.
The Coralife is 20" long, and the way it's constructed it ma,.....work at lower gph. pump.

What about that ?

I like the Pentair, but dont know if I want to spend $350 for their 40w ?

It can't hurt on a DT, but on a QT, I don't see the need.

I've got a Pentaire 50watt and it's a great UV, if you take the time and actually set it's flow rate to their recommendations it will be very effective. I have no issues with mine.
