Do I still need a skimmer?

So since getting my reefmat 250 in my 250 G2, my skimmer appears to just be a glorified aerator. Lol. This normal?

if you have nothing to skim then it is not needed as an everyday worker

I don’t know about glorified, but aeration is good!
