I have been doing a version of this for about 8 years. The power savings are amazing. 5 watts of power for circulation and I keep my 200 gallon reef heated to 78 deg.

On my last system (540g system) I had the sump in my unconditioned basement. I was running two 1000w heaters nearly 24/7 in the winter.

I put it on a small gas heater with a PEX loop in the sump. With no insulation, no care of efficiency and everything set on the lowest settings I saw my power bill drop about $40 a month in winter. My gas bill never even registered a noticeable change.

I want to say the whole setup cost me about $500 ($200 of which was the water heater) and paid for itself in about 3 years.
