I've run carbon 24/7 since I've had a tank in a reactor, and I generally try to switch out every two weeks, but sometimes its 3-4 weeks before it actually happens :)

I think carbon does make a nice improvement in water quality, which is the reason I run it.

I run carbon in a small reactor with GFO and change out about half every month. Carbon does a good job of polishing the water. Also, many corals (and other things like anemones), not just leathers, use aleopathy to get a leg up on their competition. The carbon takes most of this out.
