I also feed mussels. I freeze them and they clamp up tight, which is good as it helps prevent freezer burn. I let the mussel thaw and it starts to open. Then I take a knife and split the shells wide open. I have a deep tank so I tie a string to the mussel and toss it in. Outstanding fish food, IMO.

Live oysters turn into a quick snack for me. I absolutely love oyster with a some hot sauce.

Clams make an excellent chowder as well:)

Make sure to save a few oysters and clams for the fish;)

I can't eat Shrimp and now I can't eat bivalves lol (after having them as pets)

This is my largest Filefish. When he latched on to the Mussel-meat, he means business!

This may be kind of a dumb question but I'm gonna ask any way....

Could feeding your fish or shrimp frozen mussels on the half shell “train” them to then possibly go after your live clams? I’m just thinking once the mussel is all gone, why would they not go after the live clam sitting on the bottom right next to it? Anyone have any experience with this one way or the other?

I've read accounts of this. Feeding clams to copperband then the fish developing a taste for the live clam

I may start feeding like this too. I think @Paul B does a clam a day or something like that.

I fed my guys clams de dejour tonight too.

I buy fresh. I stick a knife in just enough to spread the shell haves open enough to get a stick in between. This makes opening really easy after freezing and confirms they are alive since they close up on the stick. After I got sticks in it goes into freezer.

When ready to use, pull out a clam lollipops, run under hot water 15seconds to help loosen the clam. Open the clam, pop out the lollipop , dice and serve.

Seems I need to get on this clam bandwagon.... speaking of... I just need to feed my finish in general. I bet they're hungry.

My sharks would gobble this before the other fish even knew it was in the water. So is it a general consensus that a week in a home freezer should kill all parasites?

Now I'm tempted to go get some live scallops and set up an unheated salt tank :) (Local scallops are cool water). When I was a kid we'd go down to the local Fisheries Biological Research Station, and they had an aquarium display with various things, including scallops that would clap to swim around their tanks :)

Should be able to get a bunch of mussels down at the shore and then stick them in dry ice and pop it in the freezer. That will clear up any parasites for sure. And the only thing I'll need to pay for is the gas and the ice.

Though I don't have fish in the tank to feed the mussels to yet, might as well get the mussels now.
