Five months into keeping my first reef tank. So far, so good. Few weeks ago, i had a pretty nasty brown algae out break limited to the top region of the rock. But I used a turkey baster and did a normal water change and it just disappeared! Haven't seen it since. All the corals are doing excellent, I got some macro algae growing (Botryocladia and Codium) and tank has been nice and stable.

Just wanted to share!

Thank you!
It'll probably become more of an SPS dominated tank soon. There's a lot of the "beginner" coral I'd like to get rid of, and keep more of the highly praised corals.
Slowly but surely.

Oh, and I just realized. The first pic is supposed to say 2016, not 2017. I can't go back and edit it...

I'm using an IM: Ghost Skimmer, the medium size I guess? There's only three sizes I know of.
And my heater is placed on the right compartment from the middle where the pump is.

Thanks, I will also be running the midsize ghost skimmer. What are you using for lighting ?

Right now, I'm using Aqua Illumination (AI) Hydra 26 Standard lights. They're okay, better if you have the remote, but it's near impossible to actually find. Without the remote, you get too much of the white balance and it seems to diminish the actinic effect. I'm hoping to upgrade to either the AI: Hydra 52 HD or the Kessil: AP 700.

The 26's are okay, but if you have the IM: 50 like I do, then try to get the 52's or the AP700's, because the 26's don't cover that much of the tank, depending how high you hang them.

I'm going use a single Kessil a350w from my current tank and see how it goes. I don't keep any SPS, so it should be enough light.

You should either get another one, or the AP700. Unless you don't mind the sides of the tank being very dimmed. Because that's how it is with my Hydra 26, and there are two lights on that set spaced a few inches apart.
