I am getting ready to finalize the wall opening and was hoping someone could tell me the water height in the main display ftom the bottom of the tank to the water line. The glass is 21 5/8ths, bottom glass is 1/2” thick. Im thinking the water line is 1-1.5in below the top plane.

I want to get the most visiblility as I can, and this guess work will either take away some viewing area or show the waterline. I would greatly appreciate specific height measurement becquse once the tank is in place it could be disappointing both ways. Thanks for your help!!

Why can't you wait and trim outside window casing trim (room side) once tank running?

Water line is going to vary based on your overflow option(s). Depending on how you plumb your tank, this might not even be a fixed answer, if you have future tank plumbing changes.

However, changing window casing is just some inside trim remodeling work.

Can tell this will be BEAUTIFUL! Please share pictures once you have it in and going.

Thanks for your suggestion @fishthinkpink and although what your saying makes sense this seems dangerous to do with the current engineering of the wall.

I’m looking to have all construction done before putting the tank on the stand. The variable water height is understandable when doing maintenance, but return pumps set at 3x -5x turn over for 99% of the time should only vary less than 1/8”. I wouldn’t have to do a higher turnover to just make the display look good if there is someone who knows the measurement within a1/4”. I would prefer to do all cutting, caulking, and nailing without the tank in the way. I know I could just be conservative and frame it at 19 5/8” but I may be jipping viewers a whole 1/2” viewing area, lol.

Looks great!! I will do the same, but was hoping there was another XL425 owner with a mixed reef out there that had the measurement for me. As you must know, mo opening = mo better. Lol. Thanks for your response @botheboss

"engineering of the wall"... you should have 2x4 framing around that drywall opening so unclear on 'dangerous' construction concern. Construction should never be dangerous or concerning... its why they created codes & set standards.

What is your overflow/exit of tank method?

For instance, inside my tank there are slots (picture below), and water leaves thru those so I know where my water level is. I'm including a picture of my tanks return method. I have one of these in each corner of my tank. I pump water up and into the tank, and then water leaves thru those openings/slots, so that is my water level. Should I change those boxes to have higher/lower slots, then the water level maintained within my tank would be different. Should I pump water faster than those slots/gravity can keep up, of course I could raise my water level right up to and over the top of my aquarium flooding the surrounding area, but of course common sense says never do that <wink>

@botheboss Nice! Dream of in wall tank like you both doing/done.

Here is a picture of my water return inside tank. There is precautionary screen on top preventing anything from jumping wall with slots, because it would be pain to try and remove anything from within. Height/depth of those slots determines my water level within tank.
