Can I add baking soda directly to the water in my mixing tank or do I need to make a solution first?

It may be a bit less likely to cause local precipitation if you dissolve it first.

I will mix some up then. What is the max dKh increase I should dose at one time?

I don't think time matters much in new salt water. But aiming for an alk of 11 dKH or higher will risk substantial preciptitation, just like other high alk mixes such as Red Sea Coral Pro or IO.
