I watch this go on and on and I get dismissed time and time again, and it's really so simple. The fact is because of the way fish are treated through transport from collection, internal parasites are rampant. While there is a stress and acclimation component, a very common issue to a fish not eating, is internal parasites. The reason my 1st advice to acclimating predatory fish is to offer live food, is that if they refuse live food, there is a serious issue going on. A healthy lion will literally eat a live ghost shrimp while floating in the bag during acclimation. Sometimes a fish will refuse food when they don't recognize what you are feeding is food. So 1st thing, research the species natural diet, and offer them foods that are included in their natural diet. At this point no excuse for being prepared to offer certain predatory fish live foods. Others examples; hard to feed tangs and angels offer mature rocks with micro algae and offer live macro algae. Spongivores and corallivores need special considerations, offering sponge from your sump or special food from the lfs, actually sacrificing a coral. Another trick for these species is using coral skeletons and foods like masstick smushed into rocks, and live pods or even live brine shrimp, live black worms. If you are not prepared or willing to do these things, please don't get these species that require special care. And shame on you if you don't do the research 1st. Fish that are alone in a qt can sometimes have more problems identifying foods, while when with other fish, may come around watching others. But it is very important to react quickly to a new addition not eating. And it's so very simple to fix, and I'm not much for meds, but I wholeheartedly and routinely recommend general cure. Even prophylactically, even if you are not sure, just treat with general cure. It is perhaps the absolute safest drug that is used in our hobby. I've told you before, I'm inspired by other post frequently. Well I just continue to watch other hobbyist using garlic and offering every food in the kitchen, polluting their tanks, and refusing to act on the simple solution, just treat with general cure. But instead, I watch the fish die, again and again.
