Gosh these are hard to take pictures of that do them justice. A top down and front view of my two smallish crocea clams. One is about 3 inches the other 1.5 inch. Don't be concerned with the blasto being in this pic, I've acclimated my LPS to run under some intense PARs so these clammies are getting 300+. It's upset because I turned on full whites to get a better pic.

Finally found Derasa clams for scale here, they are quite rare in Europe. Very small, from around 1'' to just over 2''. It's amazing how the 2'' is probably about 5 times heavier than the 1''. Hard to imagine the magnificent beasts they can become

Acclimating with a reasonably fast drip

It's huge

They had difficulty staying upright in the very coarse sand, so, gave them some shells. Safely in the sump so I can monitor them beter.

Biggest one, also with the nicest markings (they were not wysiwyg, could only choose 'spotted' or 'striped', I got 3 striped and 1 spotted)

This one is developing very nice colour, with more and more green in the center.

The smallest one, bit too early to tell what the final markings will be. For now I'm mainly hoping for fast growth

Thanks. Got it from my LFS here in Belgium. Shell is about 20cm (+/- 8 inches). Usually only Crocea and Maxima are available here… not sure why but Derasa and Squamosa are much harder to find.

I’ve put it in my tank where it should get 3-400 PAR.

Well, Clamalama-ding-dong! Those are some beautiful Tridacna my friends. That big Squamosa is awesome. I have been lucky enough to be able to pick my clams out in person from importers. I have a natural indecisiveness that always drove me crazy trying to pick out clams, but here are some that I cared for over time with very few problems or loss.

I’m so glad that shallow reefs are becoming popular. There really is no other way to look at a Tridacna clam than to learn how to approach a tank and not have them close up by looming over them with your shadow. I remember getting frustrated sometimes because I wanted to take pictures. It’s funny how they decide what they want to show you, if you’re nice.

After upgrading from Radion xr15 to ATI Straton because the maxima needed more par I slowly upped the par to give the clam more light. This had a very positive and at the same, time negative side effect, vastly improved coral growth. Why negative you ask? See:

The miyagi tort had a growth spurt, blocking a lot of light. The clam reduced its growth speed almost to zero.

After cutting the big tort branch and a green monti branch the light can reach the maxima again! Note: later I also trimmed some of the red monti at the top of the clam. Goal is to let them grow together, whenever the monti is growing above the clam its getting pruned.

Close up of the beautiful clam 3 weeks after this pruning the clam rewarded me with nice thick white growth at the top of the shell!
