Ok so I am finally about to put some actual living things in my aquarium...live rock. My question is do they need a good light to stay alive and to spread to my dry rock?

IMO you're gonna have a mix of photosynthetic vs non photosynthetic creatures on your LR, so a light would definitely help. I wouldn't worry too much about picking up an expensive one though, any decent light would do fine.

Ok, I guess I need to b a little more specific. Would a regular fluorescent bulb work or should I go ahead and get some t5s now that I was planning on getting later.

i would just get what your planning on using rather then spend money on cheap lights just to buy good ones later.

^+1, but often times your stocking plans change. So you never know. If you're set on stocking plans though, then I say go for a quality light
